RUSSIA AND THIBET:The Shanghai Times says that information has been received to the effect that B Lessar, arone of the recent interviews with the Chinese Peace Plenipoten-- tiary Prince Ching, brought forward the Thibe tan question. He highly recommended that independence should be allowed to the people of Thibet and that the ruler should be an independent monarch. Rumours have been' circulating respecting a secret understanding between M. Lessar aud, Thibet..

HIGHWAY AND STREET ROUBERIES : -Ten cases of highway and street robbery were reported to the Palice in 1901, of which 8 occurred in the New Territory. In connection with four of the cases 14 persons were arrested, 9 of whom were convicted and 5 discharged. Only one of the highway robberies was upon a European, the case in which Mr. Frank Esrom was assaulted on Bowen Road and robbed of his watch and chain. For this two men were

convicted and sentenced to six years' hard

Jabour and a whipping..

Last night our old friends the Dallas Com-

The only hitch in the whole affair was on entire absence of programmes, which it appears was occa- sioned by the box containing these very necessary adjuncts having been carried on to Canton by the vessel in which the

fact was not discovered until 6.30 last evening, Campany came from Shanghai, and the

when it was of course, too late to remedy trusted to rise superior to any little contretemps matters. However, Mr. Dillas may always by of this description and the swing with which the piece went quite made up for the inconvenience. "The Tortador" is undoubtedly an excellent piece, the music being especially light and pretty, and we are pleased to hear that, by special request, it is to be staged again on Saturday. The dresses were very good indeed and the scenery excellent, but the orchestra was a triflé weak and might be improved with ridvantage.

Mr. and Mrs. Dallas,'as "Sammy Giggs, the old coachian and Dona Teresa, respectively, were all that could be desired, the latter looking particularly charming. Our old acquaintance, Mr. Godwin, mada a capital Carajolo, and as Pettifer, the dealer in wild animals, Mr. Riley would be hard to beat. The first song of the Torendors was excellently rendereil and "Bunch and Judy," a capital duct, and "Every body's awfully good to me" were particularly

well received. In fact there was not a dull

moment throughout the whole performance, the play being very funny and laughable,

CRIMINAL SESSIONS.

(Before His Lordship A. G. Wise, Acting Chief Justice,) ·

March 18th,

The Criminal Sessions were opened this morning at the Supreme Court before the Act- Ing Chief Justice, His Lordship A. G. Wise. The calendar contained the names of three prisoners charged under 18 separate counts, Attorney General (Mr. W. M. Goodman, K.C.) At the commencement of the Court the.

explained to his Lordship that having regard to certain approaching changes in the con- stitution of the Court, and with a view to facilitate the completion of various pending matters le bad obtained the consent of the Govertiment for his learned friends to conduct

the cases on behalf of the prosecution.

THE BANK ROBBERY.

Mr. M. W. Sinde appeared on behalf of the Crown, and Mr. E. H. Sharp, represented the prisoner.

THE CHINESE POST-OFFICE is able to record a great success, the Ostasiatische Lloyd says. Litil now their stamps were not recog nised by the countries of the postal ubian, ex- cept Hongkong Macao, and Formose, and there only for local reasons. From the 1st January, Chinese mail matter with Chinese pedagog stamps only (ap Hongkong stamps being necessary) has been forwarded by the FrenchThe first case taken was that of Wang Hoi post-office of any treaty port, to countries of Pang, the shroff recently employed at the the postal union. She is of 15:25 knots speed and has a nomial coat supply of go tone, while her armament consists of a 4-in. and four 3-iu, quick-firing gups. This class of sloop is hamque rigged and we hear that they are

pleaded guilty.

In addressing the Court, Mr. Slade, who spoke very inaudibly, was understood to say that the simple facts of the case were that the prisoner was a shroff in the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank. He had access to the treasury, or strong room, op the premises in which the coins and notes were kept. Loans were granted to Chinese and the prisoner was the man who was responsible for the counting of the contents of the bags of gold handed in as security for loans in dollars. On two occasions he gave certificates that the bags contained a certain amount of gold, whereas they only contained Hongkong cents. On two other occasions he

generally considered to be over masted: Their certified the bags contained ruore than they disappearing angle is so, and wo learn that really did. M. Sharp replied that no doubt the Bank would have discovered it at a later date, but the

charges against the prisoner would then have been very difficult, perhaps, impossible to prove." He urged upon His Lordship that the defalcations were discovered solely in conse quence of the prisoner's voluntary confession to the compradore, who, after all, was the only person injured by the thefts.

the prisoner had pleaded guilty, and that In passing sentence, His Lordship said

was about the best thing he had done in the

matter. Counsel hand said all he could on his behalf, but that simply amounted to the fact that the man did not add lying to theft. He was a man in a position of trust, and had pre- sumally been for sometime, and therefore his punishment would perhaps come more bearily, on him than on other men, but at the same

time he had to consider the community in general. He had seen in the papers and pre sumed it was true, that an application was made to the Magistrate to deal with the case summarily. The magistrate, be thought exercised a very wise discretion in sending the case to the Supreme Court, because any nunishment he could have inflicted would have been absolutely inadequate to the offence. The sentence of the Count was that the prisoner would get a year's hard labour upon each count, all consecutive, making altogether five, years' imprisonment with hard labour,

MORE FORGED BANK NOTES.

Tsi Mun pleaded guilty to uttering forged bank notes and having same in his possession. | Mr. Morgan Phillips prosecuted on behalf of the Crown.

In his statement to the Court the prisoner | said a man sold him the forged $10 notes for $5.50. He knew at the time he was buying forged notes, and the man guaranteed him the use of them for three weeks and if be could not dispose of them in that time they were to be returned. He took the notes to a friend to look and was told that he could not use them. Then he went to the man for the purpose of returning them but the man was unwilling to accept them or to return the money. A quarrel ensued, after which he was told that the man had a relative who kept a grocer's shop and would take the notes, He saw him at Lower Lascar Rond, but as there were a great many people there he proceeded to a vacant piece of ground at the end of West Street and disposed of them. The man afterwards blew a whistle and a sergeant immediately arrested the prisoner.
