galore would be showered upon him. But alas for vain hopes 1. The Governors, Secretaries, underlings and hirelings received him with urbane hospitality, and perhaps some saniles may have recalled the day when Capt. Bayley threatened to string him up at the yard arm at Tientsin Railway Station for endeavouring to obstruct the relief of Peking, but material satis.

faction he got none. The Governors were siezed with temporary irbecility and declared that their powers did not go the length of pro- mising to return anything, and at last Tong withdrew, and returned to Peking a sadder, if

not a wiser man.

TERS, IDLE TEARS!

I have just heard from Peking that the Em press Dowager went copiously over the ladies ht the audience, referring in ifloods of emotion to the terrible events of 1900. She then gave them each two Dutch gold coins of the 14th century, also gold bracelets studded with, pearls, diamonds, rubies, emeralds, etc., and has since sent them rolls of rich silks.

MORE ASSURANCES,

Jung Lu has improved the shining hour by runding round to all the Ministers and calling Heaven to witness that he had done his best to prevent the disasters of 1900-and the whole of them think "Bosh"!

ORIENTALS IN LONDON. ·

Near Limehouse-causeway the joss stick is regularly burned before the ancestral tablets. In Popular the faithful Parsee day by day turns his face to the sun at the hour of worship. In the poorer quarters of Stepney mes of many castes struggle to observe the ordinances of their faith or the customs of their people amid strange surroundings, The very vices of the East are here allowed to continue unchecked, 10 unobstrusive are the men affected by them.

Here we can see fan-tan played by clean. shaven, almond, eyed, plaited-haired Chinese with the assiduity of a religious cult. Here we can enter the dingy opium den, its walls deco rated with cabalistic signs, and its hard wooden couches necupied by strangers enticing them- selves into artificial slumber;

clothes,

Near by you can buy bird's nest soup, or genuine curry, mangoes, or blocks of Siberian tei. A Chinese, lundryman will wash one's A defi nimble-fingered Hindu will shave you. You can find a black ayah to care for your children or a faithful and patient man from Canton to be your body.servant.

PASSING STRANGERS. The Orientals in London are to be numbered by the many hundreds. Most of them are mere passing strangers--here to-day, gone to-morrow. A few settle in our midst, marry, learn our tongue, and seek to be of us, We have the sailor and the poor traveller at the docks, the swarthy law student in the lodging-house of Bloomsbury or South Kensington, the ambitious merchant around Fenchurch-street. Marquis Ito, who next to the Mikado Mutsubtto was the real maker of modem Japan, lived around these decks for some months when a lad, and there got his first impression of Western civilisation, Other coming rulers of the East are perhaps doing the same to-day,

Limehouse is the centre of Oriental London. There we can see men of all the dusky strains of the world; men from Aden and from the isles of the Southern Seas; la scars and swarthy sons of Africa, Cingalese and men of Goa, Hindus of every caste, and the proud and quick.tem. pered Malay. They lack, however, the turbans, the fanciful dresses and picturesque costumes in which they are so often depicted. These they leave behind, and it is but rarely that one sees turban or fez in London streets. The men are mostly sailors, and they dress as such, in the serge suits, jaunty caps, and twisted neck- ties of their class.

The men do not give much trouble to the law. They are for the most pint quiet, peaceful, and well-behaved, accustomed to discipline and prepared to submit to it. The Chinese colony is quite a separate sec- tion of Oriental life in London. There are several shops in Limehouse-causeway owned by Chinese, with Chinese hieroglyphics over their doors and run in regular. Chinese fashion. The very rockoning of change is done by enumerators, on the counter, after the old, Romin fashion. With some of these shops gambling dens and opium rooms are regularly maintained.

The opium dens are not picturesque.. The one interest in them is the interest of curiosity.: None but Chinese go to them, save on very rare occasions. Therefore don't wery, There will always be lank notes enough for as the only trouble is to get the safely and mugly lodge in our pockets. And that is as hard a trick in America as it is in England,

Gul and silver coins also rear out and go to the melting pot to be recast. Wherever there is frietion there is destruction more or less rapid.

It is this tendency of things to go to pieces that led Mr. Elizabeth Shirt to speak of horself'ng a physicul wreck. Ships that get fast na rocks and are there. Jammered into its by the wares, obviously suggested the comparison.

In her own account, written on the 10th Angst, 1000, she gives us the main facts. There is nothing novel in theta, which is all the worse; for if carer like hers are unmen the reasons for trying to prevent them, or to cure them, are all the more imperative and pressing. Suppose, out of every four vessels zighting English waters, one at least got wreckel' between the Selilies and the Isle of Wight !

WHAT ARE THEY DOING IN LONDON?! Most of them are sailors, who have come here on ocean ships, serving at native wages, and waiting here till they are engaged again. They will ship for any port in any land provided it be not their own-unless they wish to return home for special reasons. Shipowners like them, and they find it easy to obtain berths, while Europeans are standing idle at the docks, for they are more tractable, more amenable to argument, and more obedient. The Hindu- though not the Chinaman-will allow a bully. ing captain or hectoring 'mate to abuse him without retaliation. The Chinaman, however, is quite as able to resent illtreatment as his breathing was had, and as soon as ever the cold and English brother.

Here, probably for the first time, these Easterners find themselves treated by whites on a basla of equality. We have too few men of colour here to fear the domination, bence the absence of race repulsion. Universal out of Europe, it is in London almost non-existent. Even the Hindu finde himself able to mix among the poor white population round the docks on terms of comradeship. For him this is often demoralising. Open the door of many a public-house round Limehouse and you will find black men and brown men there in their crowds mixed up (with the lowest hangers on of the district
