TO BANİSH SLEEP-A society, has recent ly been organised at Chicago with the object of waging war against sleep. The members are pledged never to sleep over four hours, alsó to train their children to do with less sleep. The president of the society says: "Since, limiting myself to four hours I have felt more active, energetic, and healthy than ever before. Millions of people are wasting their lives by unnecessary steep. It is also a sure sign of laziness, and lazy people are not wanted in Chicago," The society has a large membership, and branches will be established in other parts of the country.

PROMENADE CONCERT AT THE CITY HALL.
To many who like to witness a contest of this desciption we can only say that as far as is possible to find out--the match will be decided on its merits, and the referee is em powered to stop the business if any signs of an arrangement is shown, We, on our part, do not think it will be to, and look forward to a manly display of an art that we should be sorry to see fall into disuse.

the hearing was not resumed till ten minutes past three.
The next witness for the prosecution was Mr. G. W. Thrunstad, second in command 'on the I. M. C. launch Leung. Ching. Being sworn, he said that acting under instructions we left the launch at 3.30 am, in a fishing junk. On the afternoon of the same day, while in the junk, he saw ay bakow boat go' alongside the Song Li launch, and witnessed the transference from the Song Li to the native boat of ten packages. Where he first saw the boat he was about roo yards away there being almost a dead calm at the tinie. He hoisted the Chinese flag and fired warning shots at the hakow boat but owing to thers being no wind, he could not get alongside. The alleged smugglers returned the fire. There were 13 men in the boat. The junk he was on carried 4 muzzle loading guns and there were seven men with him armed with Mauser tiles.
In reply to Mons Hardouin. He said that while only about 100 yards away he distinctly saw ten mat packages transferred to the boat. When they appeared to have finished he started firing at them from the junk he was on. The hakow boat hung on to the stern of the Sang Li launch and was towed away. He put the junk about so as to reach a position on the starboard side of the launch. As the boat was being towed he continued to fire but missed her.
The witness here pointed out the position of the boats on the chart.

There were no disting- tive marks on the boat he was chasing, She had blunderbussed and fired repeatedly. His instructions were that on seeing any suspicious; proceedings, he was to first hoist the Chinese ensign and then fire warning shots. He did this and by the time he fired live shot the hakow boat was about three or four hundred Ernest Gilleyards away.. Mons. Hardouin asked Mons. Murchand if it were possible for the boat to get that distance away in such a short time.
A discussion arose and then the witness continuing said, He distinctly saw the hakow boat go alongside, take in some packages and
