WING to the insufficiency of accommoda- tion in the present building and the in- creasing demand for admission, it has been found necessary to extend the wings of the main building and to enlarge the Chinese de- partment by an malditional storey with two wings. The estimated cost will amount to over $15,000. To cover these expenses we Appeal to the liberality of all friends of Education. The establishment has been in existence for the last 25 years and is open to all classes. Much of the clerical work of the city is carried on by its past pupils. As this is the first time we have applied for assistance wel expect a generous response. The names of our most liberal

Benefictors will be inscribed upon narble tablets, as a lasting testimony of their generosity,

SUBJECTED TO GHUULISH CRUELTY.

Per Preussen, for Shanghai-Mrs Portala Another dreadful case of torturing children

and child, Messrs. S. Mador, J. Nolasco da is in the hands the police, says a Kangoon Silva, N. J. Marcasso, M. Stemberg, Pona paper. A little Chinese boy, a slave purchasedville, E. Bull, A. R. Catto, Mrs. Kahler, 1r. in China, escaped froni a house in Tarokhtar and Mrs. Spinney, and Mr. and Mrs. Bamg. For Nagasaki-6 Japanese. For Kobi-1 and going to Mr. Chin Tsong asked him to

Japanese rescue his little sister, six years old, from the hands of a Chinese woman. The boy, whose body was covered with bruises and scars, said that he did not care much about himself, as he had been treated a little better of late, but he said that his litle sister was being continually tortured in the most horrible manner. The boy's story was discovered to be only too true, and the child was rescued by the police with her body showing marks of the most ghoulish cruelty, Some of the tortures that have been inflicted with hot irons.

on the linle thing are quite unnameable, but her little limbs and budy are bruised swollen and scarred all over from blows etc. This Chinese woman some time ago was found guilty of torturing a Burmese baby, which she had got hold of, and with the most unfortunate leniency the magistrate les her off with a light sentence. Apparently this very dreadful persdo is not happy without she has children in her power to torture, and when she came out of prison she purchased two children, a boy and girl in China. Apparently these children have been tortured for months, up to the time the boy found an opportunity of getting out of the clutches of the horror No Fire Insurance will be effected.

As soon as she knew that the boy had got Bills of Lading will be countersigned by

away she went and hid herself and the police JARDINE, MATHESON, & Co are trying to find her. The Chinese com-
