Another Edict, dated the 3rd, appoints Weih Chi-Kuei, late Governor' of Kiangsu, to the Governorship of Anhui, Au Eo-shou, late it must be false. You can't get that fluffy look Director Grain Transportation, to the. Govern-naturally under a net, and she was putting her.

oh, Mama was an angry and said I wasn't to dance with him any more, only she couldn't find papa, and when he did come he was quite stupid with him and talked so funnily and Mama said she would'nt come out, again and and we haven't seen Pa since. the water was turned off and George could at have a bath and so he had to go as he ...dressed in" red brocade with black trimmings and really looked very chic.

but the awful crush as we came in spoilt it all... yes, he asked Papa if he l

no my dear might call and Papa suid...

Yuan Shi-kal has gone to Peking and while there he will call upon all the Foreign Ministers. He visited Li Hung-chang's coffin and was deeply affected declaring he, inissed his old colleague sorely. Li's coffin is just now one of the attractions of Peking and is visited by all foreign sightseers in the capital.

Bands of robbers have been creating trouble around Hosewu and Yan,tson, where they are so daring that they waylay travellers in broad daylight, and, rob even the poorer classes of their clothing.

A traveller from Homan states that the roads are very bad and the weather severe and it is anticipated that they will not be fit for the Empress to travel on account of her recent illness." Yuan was memorializing the Court to proceed to Peking with all haste, and not make the journey in short stages no account of bad- roads, as some bave suggested, as the people at. this season are very poor and can ill afford the additional strain of more halting places. Chang Chih-tung, on the other hand, is said to be urging the Court not to go to the "dangerous place" ie. Peking, but to proceed to Hsiang Yang in Honan, and establish the capital there and he would conuect it by rail with the Yangize. This advice, of course agrees with the counsels of Yunglu and his ilk, but surprises one rather as coming from Viceroy Chang. It seems more than probible that in spite of the Edict fixing, the date of the Courts' start for Peking, that a fresh stand will be made on the plea of Tientsin-City and the railway being first given up. The matter is a very serious one for Tientsin, as it is of the utmost importance that the City be held until the river con servancey have finished their work,

The Industrial School at Péking has now been open some four months and has been very favourably reported to the Throna the bath by kate Li and the Provincial Treasurer of Chihli, and it is being well supported financially.

WISE AND OTHERWISE.

Have you

ever noticed, Gold Lace and Mr. Editor, what a demo. Brass Battons. ralizing effect Naval and Miltary uniforms have upon the fair sex? The Naval or Military officer in mufti is much the same looking sort of individual as you or I, and we can then easily compete with him for the smiles of the fair ones. But go to a ball where uniform is worn and see how the poor, dingy, black-coated individual is left out in the cold. His pro gramme remains empty fill well on in the evening and no girl will look at him until she sees that the last chance of adding the name of somebody in red or blue to her card has atterly vanished. These red and blue indivi- duals invariably grab all the supper dances as well, and the result is that we poor black garbed ones have to creep in alone and eat up what is left. Really I don't think that this is right and proper and, there are a large number of other folk of the same way of thinking. For this reason I hear that it is suggested to revive the evening dress of the Stuart period, so that plain civilians can appear in as fine dresses as their Naval and Military rivale. This will no doubt be very pleasing to most people, but I can't way that I think much of it for (in strict con- fidence mind) my legs will not fill silk stockings properly. Can you wonder at my being some what discontented under the circumstances?

The next one was decidedly insult ing, fit referred to a lady as a "cow specipit I need hardly remark that coon spepalist was meant, for the Government has has yet appointed a lady in the place of Dr. dds. The next one makes me feel quite hirsty, for it says, that at a recent organ recital certain ladies and gentlemen (1 refrain from mentioning names) took port. This puts quite a now complexion on organ recitals and should attract a large number of recquits to the choir. Last but not least comes a most astound- ing annoncement that, while going ashore in a sampai at Taku, a lady "gave birth to a medical missionary." I have often heard it said that no man is born great-bút, to the printer, ill things are possible.
