Passengers are allowed to break their journey at any point Through Passage Tickets granted to England, France and Germany by all trans-Atlantic lines of Steamers, and to the principal cities of the United States or Canada.

Passengers holding through ORDERS TO EUROPE have the choice of the Overland Rail Routes from San Francisco, including the SOUTHERN PACIFIC, CENTRAL PACIFIC, UNION PACIFIC, DENVER and RIO GRANDE, and NORTHERN PACIFIC RAIL WAY;

also the CANADIÂN PACIFIC RAILWAY on payment of £4 în 'addition to the regular tarif rate.

Passengers holding Orders for OVERLAND CITIES in the United States have between SAN FRANCISCO and CHICAGO, the option of the SOUTHERN PACIFIC, CENTRAL PACIFIC, UNION PACIFIC, DENVER and RIO GRANDE, and other direct connecting Railways, and from Chicago to destination the choice of direct lines.

Special rates (First-class only) to European Points; are granted to Missionaries, Members of the Naval, Military, Diplomatic and Consular Services, and European Civil Service Officials lecated in Asia, and to European Officials in the Service of the Governments of China and Japan.

LECTURE BY MRS. TIMOTHY RICHARD,

At Shanghai, .en, the rath instant, Mr. Timothy Richard read an interesting paper on "Chineac Social Customs," at a meeting of the China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society. A large nudience assembled, presided over by F. S. A. Bourne, Esq. Mrs. Richard submitted an ably condensed style, a descriptive résumé of the best-known customs of the native, vaitons. Incidentally she expressed the hope Chinese, and also added many original obser that the practice of fost-binding would soon become a thing of the past, and meanwhile sho wished Godspeed to the efforts of the Anti-Foot- Binding Society. Her remarks upon ancestral' worship, which she described as a mere form of showing respect, elicited criticisms from various on, that ancestral womhip was identical. with persons present, Dr. Parkergiving it as his opin
