SMOKING CONCERT AT THE
R. E. MESS. €
The genial Non-Commissioned Officers of the Royal Engineers were not going to let the urrival of a new draft to the Corps pass without welcoming them in a fitting and proper" manner. A smoking concert was arranged, which took place yesterday evening, and never were new comrades and, in some cases, old friends received in a heartier manner. The hospitality of the Mess is a byeword in Hong- 'kong and anyone who failed to thoroughly enjoy himself last night must be the sort of individual who should go and live in a cave by bifuself. Q.M. Sgt. George R.E. conducted the pro ceedings and worthily filled the chair. As everyone knows, a great deal of the success of a smoter is due to the Chairman, and
with,
and Mr. George assumption of quiet dignity, maintained ex- cellent order. Sapper Long was the accom panist and carried out his (sometimes) difficult duties in a manner that satisfied the singers.

sufficient had arrived to relieve all the hands (a voice," No, worse luck !"), but possibly a few mare, might be following at a later date and then the remainder would be able to go. In conclusion he acknowledged the great friend. liness and courtesy of the officers of the Patroilus during the voyage to Hongkong (Applause). He did not think there was a single wish that anyone had on board which was not gratified, if possible, during the whole of the voyage (Applause). He asked those present to drink the health of the officers of the Patrocius (Applause).
The toast was heartily drunk after which the Chairman proposed the " District Engineers and Officers, R.E., and the Officers of the Civil Staff, K.E."
-
Mr. Smith, chief officer of the Patroclus, responded to the toast submitted by Q.M.S. Bryant and after thanking those present for the kind words spoken, expressed the hope that the voyage back to old England would be, equally as pleasant as the outward trip (Applause). Wishing them all a very Merty Christmas and a Happy New Year, he remained theirs sincerely, the representative of the Patroclus (Applause),

Mr. Whittock was in good voice in The Handolier and The Wolf, his fine full bass voice being heard to great advantage; although somewhat lacking in the top register, his lower notes de deep and true. S. Sergt Polkinghorne, R.E., gave a very tuneful old ballad, the chorus of which was quickly caught up by ail,
Mr. Clark's recitations, Dandy Fifth and fee, were a marked feature of the evening; as al- though'a trifle ton orthodox in gesture, they were clearly and forcibly given.
Sgt. Major Tower, of the Hongkong Volun- teers, next produced his graphophone and for 20 minutes kept his audience amused with eight selections. The machine is one of the most distinct we have heard and the applause was universal at the conclusion
Mr. R. G. Heckford, when called upon, ren-
dered Gallery and Boxes and The man who heat, the drain, in his) usual robust style. The first mentioned was as well acted as sung, and Sapper Long did very well in following on the piano, as it is chiefly recitative.
Mr. Oxberry rendered The Garonne and Fione artistically, although suffering from a relaxed throat, and the company present were well content to go on listening as long as he would sing.
Corp. Eveleigh, R. E., with On the Road to Mandalay, was packed up with the entire strength of the audience in the chorus.
Sergt. Viggers' two songs were received with yells of laughter, the style of singing, the humourous words, and eccentric action making a combination that no one could withstand..
Songs by Messrs. Baldwin, Carr, and Caesar, followed by a general uprising for God Save the King, brought a most successful concert to a close,

bers of the Mess had heard hiņi talk quite length of time. A man named Mit Sin was a enough, and those who had just joined would hawker whose, business it was to sell cakes, and his custom had been to be at West probably do se before leaving. It was un- necessary for him to repeat how, the officers Point every morning about ten o'clock on enjoyed attending their concerts, and especially his way to Aberdeen. He left there between en such an occasion as the present, when they four and five o'clock in the evening and returned -had to welcome some fresh N. C. O's. (Ap-to Hongkong. He hoped those new arrivals would in pursuance of his usual custom, he took have a jolly good time while in Hongkong, and his cakes and went from West Point to though he had no doubt that some of them Aberdeen, would be kept fairly busy, they would enjoy a provided they kept themselves fit, and there was no reason why they should not look after themselves. At any rate, whatever work or anything else they might have to do, he could assure them they would enjoy themselves in that Mess (Applause).
Mr. G. 1. Bryant, of the Civil Staff, also responded, and said how happy he was to asso. ciate himself in welcoming the N.C.O.'s who had recently arrived in the Colony. He hoped they would have a good time in Hongkong, and though they would have plenty of work he was sure they would also have heaps of play. Be tween the two they would keep very fit, and have a good time. So far as those who were going home were concerned he was sure they would have pleasant recollections of Hongkong, and spend more happy times together (Ap plause).

A rather unpleasant game was played yester. day on the Hongkong Football Club ground between these two teams. The Club's forward line was again altered and Capt. Moberley, H. K. R., being unable to play, was replaced by G. H. Edwards.
A half-past four the teams lined up and, Lowe having won the loss, the Fusiliers started the game before a meagre number of spectators. Play was at once transferred into the Club's quarters by a rush from the Fusilier. forwards but they were checked by Rusself and the ball travelled back to mid-feld. Kerr got posses. sion but made a hopeless muddle, and the visiting forwards once more got the ball. A foul by Bon ner stopped their rusly, but no advantage was taken of the opportunity. A foul should have been given at this point against the Fusiliers' outside left who literally jumped on to Russell's back. For a moment we thought that he was badly

Ofcourse, they tried to make. an excuse and said they were running away to give the alarm as they had seen a man robbed. They both maintained they were spectators running away to call for assistance. Upon being, searched not very much property was found upon them, as the bulk of it seemed to have been taken by the men who got away, evidently because there had been no time to make a proper division.

Witnesses were called in support of the charges, and the jury found prisoners guilty, and they were each sent to prison for five years, and were to receive two whippings of twenty strokes each.
