FIRE AT WANGHAI,
THIS AFTERNOON.
Shortly after three o'clock this afternoon the clanging of the alarm bell in the Queen's Road Clock Tower brought crowds of people into the main street to learn the district in which the outbreak hnd occurred: Chinese firemen in rickshas, were soon being carried along to the Eastern part of the City, and it quickly become known that an outbreak of fire had occurred at. Wanchai opposite the No.. Police Station, and a few doors from the -No. 2 Fire Station. A room in No. 1or, Wanchai Road, a small two storeyed Chinese building had become ignited, and within a very few minutes was burning fiercely. The members of the Eastern district brigade were at once able to direct a large quantity of water on to the building and, with aid from the Central Fire Station, the Games were prevented from spre- ading though at one time a large Chinese ston within a few feet of the burning building, was in danger of catching alight. The roof and upperstorey were totally demolished and goods in a small chandlers shop beneath were render- ed useless by the smoke and water. Inspector Kemp, of the Central Police Station present logeer with strong body of police, who successfully prevented the larg crowd of Chinese from hampering the work of the fire mon.

SUCCESSFUL TOWING FEAT.
It is always pleasing to hear of a difficult work undertaken and well carried out. This is the case under notice. The Norwegian" Steam Skuld was found by the French Mail with a broken sh it a short distance from Touren; she was towed into that port and arrangements were made with Captain Fenis of the s.s. Pakthan (Messrs. Bradley & Co.) to take her to Hongkong. A four inch wire hawser was made fast with some fathoms of ship's cable in the centre as a spring and the Skuld was brought to Hongkong a distance of nearly 600 miles without a break. The whole per formance reflects great credit on Capt. Ferris (by the way, the youngest captain on the China coast) and his officers, as although no gales were met with, a lumpy sea was running and six knots were made.

THE DALLAS COMPANY,
TO ARRIVE IN FEBRUARY.
Hoogkong playgoers will be pleased to hear that our old friends Mr. and Mrs. Heary Dallas are to revisit us early In February. The principal item in the Company's repertoire this season is "The Toreador," which had such a successful run at the Gaiety Theatre, Lon- don. Not only has Mr. Dallas excelled himself in the staging of this piece, but he has very considerably strengthened his Company,
Speaking of the opening performance, the Calcutta Englishman says:——
The audience which assembled at the Theatre Royal last evening, was of a character and dimension that could hardly have failed to satisfy the most captious of managers. To Mr. Henry Dallas the sight of the house, literally packed with representatives of Calculta society, must have been a matter of the keenest personal and professional pride.
The theatre going public of Calcutta have long ago come to regard Mr. and Mrs. Dallas, not merely asenterprising entertainers and clever artistes, but as friends to be warmly welcomed as each amusement season comes round. The

FREE LUNCH,
The "fan tan" shops are doing everything possible to induce people to patronize them, The shops themselves are almost always fitted up in an attractive way This however, does not appear to be a sufficient attraction. Now the shops, or a number of them, hava put out notices that to the person spending upwards of twenty dollars a substantial meal will be given free of charge. To the man who spends only five dollers a luncheon will be given. This is certainly something new in the way of induce ments to gambling. The officials keep a close watch over the shops and are careful to see that all payments for the right to open shops are promptly paid. It may be that the heavy demands of officials and others make it neccesary for the shops to use these new methods to increase their zevenues...

THE INSURRECTION OUTSIDE SHANHAIKUAN. News received from native official sources concerning the insurrection at Chaoyang, outside. Shanhaikuan, Manchuria, reports that the T'saili and their allies, the Boxers, now number consider- ably over 30,000 well-armed men, against whom General Ma Yi-k'un's troops, sent from Peking, numbering only 5,000 old men, are perfectly powerless. It is feared that un- less the Government troops be considerably. augmented and more energy shown in sup pressing the insurgents, these people will create considerable trouble in Chibli province this winter and the following spring. The appoint ment of Viceroy Yuaa Shih-k'ai to Chibli where he may reasonably be expected to use the same. tern measures in his new jurisdiction as had been put into force last year in Shantung will doubtless strike the necessary terror in the hearts of the Chaoyang' insurgents to make them disperse and turn peaceful farmers once
more.
A DECORATION FROM THE FRENCH
REPUBLIC.
The Universal Chretis reports that HE Wang Chih-ch'un recently removed from the Governorship of Anhul, was recently the recipient of a decoration, bestowed upon H.E, by the Government of the French Republic, and forwarded on to Nganking by the French Consul-General of this part. Permission has now been obtained by H.E. from the Throne to accept and wear the decoration. The reason for the bestowal ofthe decoration is said to have been H.Es cordial treatment of the former French Consul-General of Shanghai, Count de Bezaure, when the latter visited the Yangtze ports in the summer, which was in contrast to the cold reception received from the other Viceroys and Governors. This was reported to the French Government on M. de Bezaure's return home, with the above result
