In view of the gradual opening up of northern China to foreign trade, with the consequent
ment of English interests, it is of especial im- portance to learn that a boarding school for boys has now been established at Wei-hai-wei. This seaside resort has already earned a reputation for salubrity, and being under, British jurisdic- tion, is a safe guarantee that no venture would be permitted unless conducted on sound sanitary principles. Thus it is that the school has claims upon those in the North of China, and considering it is conducted on public school lines, of the status of the average grammar and proprietary schools of England, there is every reason for believing that in the very near future it

FOOTBALL.
H.M.S, "GLORY" V. 2ND COMPANY, RA, These two teams met in the first round of the Shield Competition on Saturday last. The Glory chose to play on the Hongkong Football Ground, and play wis commenced before a large number of spectators.
The Glory won the toss and Phinn kicked off for the Gunners. They made little of their advantage however, and the ball was scont taken into their territory where it remained practically during the whole of the game. The Glory were by far the better team their com- bination was good and their shooting far above the average.
At half-time they had notched two goals to their credit while the Gunners had failed to scare. This was due no doubt to the bad combination shown by the Gunners; they certainly had a good defence to tackle, but a better show should have been both in the half back and forward divisions. Murphy, their custodian, played an excellent game right through, and but for this the result on paper would have looked far more one sided. The Glory scored another goal in the second half, and were attacking when time was called..
Results H.M.S, Glory 3"goals; B. A. #í), The following were the team :- H.M.S. Glory L, Morgan. Goal; T. Urqu. hart and Lieut Sherbrooke, backs; G. Watson, . Lane, and G.A. Wade, half-backs; S. Dow. son, S. Hansford, A, E, Melford, A. Moore and G. Gottell, forwardı.

Mr.. A. R. Love was the referee, and T. Moore and Gunner Walsh acted as linesinen.
In the second round H.M.S. Glory will meet the Rangers Football Club, This match will probably be played on the football ground or zbe Racecourse.
