A DISGRACE to Hongkong is undoubtedly the condition of Queen's Road. At the time!

this quagmire was being made, we took the liberty of pointing out that the construction was faulty and binted that there were more old, women on the job than those carrying the little- baskets of mud and brickbats. THE TAIKOO CLUB Cycling Track is opened to-day, and those intending to enter for the New Year's sports are already practicing. THE PROCLAMATION declaring the port

mines exist in Manchuria is said to be entirely unfounded. Mr. H. C. Hoover who has arrived at San Francisco from, China, is of opinion, however, that the coal deposits are enormous. A British company (the C.E. and M. Company) has taken over a coal mine which formerlybe. lunged to Li Hung-chang, and also a coalfield in Chihli, 30 miles long by 12 miles wide. The company proposes to bring coal and coke to San Francisco by its own colliers, consisting of a line of 12 steamers.. This will enable it to lay down coke at $6 a zon.

Totals

The report of the Consulting Committee together with the accounts have already ap peared in these columns. It will be remem. bered that the set profit after paying all working expenses is $3,864.58 and the balance. remaining at Profit and Loss Account after deducting Interim Dividend and Consulting Committee's fee $3,126.00, paid on 24th April, igo1, is $3,738.58 which together with interest received and scrip fees, gives a total of $5,867:55. The Chairman said :-Genilemen, the Re port and Accounts having been in your hands for some days, we shall, with your permission, take them as read. As you are aware, this is our first year of existence, and I think you will agree with me that the results attained are very satisfactory. You will note that, although the guaranteed dividend is to per cent we have been able to declare 12 per cent, besides writ- ing off a substantial amount on account of good will. You will also observe that we did not consider it necessary to write off anything from the value of the steamers. As explained in the report, these steamers stand in our books" so low that we may safely allow them to stand nt their present valuation. As was eriginally intended, we, during the year, ordered a third boat from Messrs. Bailey and Murphy, which was completed to our entire satisfaction, and is now employed in the regular work of the Com- pany. With all our boats fully employed, we may not unreasonably hope to show better results at our next meeting. The steamers of the Company are all working satisfactorily. With these few remarks, Gentlemen, I will now propose the adoption of the Report and Accounts unless any shareholder wishes to ask any questions, which I shall be pleased to answer to the best of my ability.
