combined action on a large scalo, amongst British shipowners might enable them to do that for themselves which foreign shipowners had done for them by their Governincats. Pro- fessor Alleyne Ireland (Chicago) and Mrs. Archibald Litile took part in the discussion. The latter asked whether, in place of subsidies, it was not possibis to grant to shipowners monopolies of routes by International agree ment for a certain number of year? The Pre- sident said it would be interesting to know whether the Germans made much money out of their high-speed lines.

tress August 8th between Hongkong and Moji. (1730) The liner dighted the Lawhill at 10.16 p.m., -in latitude 31, degrees go minutes north and longitude 126 degree 15 minutes east in a heavy sea following a typhoon. The Lawkill was a point on the Glenogle "port bow and was flying signals of distress, which were promptly answered. She lay on her beam ends in the trough of the sea with a heay list of 30 to 35 degrees to starboard, heading to westward. Her spars aloft were apparently intact, but were stripped of sails, those on the foremast hanging in rags. After some difficulty and at a great risk owing to the heavy sea running, thie Glenagle's port lifeboat was lowered and sent aloagside of the distressed vessel in charge of the first officer Captain Jarvis reported his ship safe and declined an offer to tow him to Nagasaki, 210 miles distant, but asked that the Glenegle's surgeon be put on board, as the ship's carpenter. had fallen from aloft and was seriously injured: Dr, Seeley responded and

spent several hours with the injured man, rendering all possible mui. The liner then proceeded. on her way after having been delayed four hours.

'The Lawkili, a vessel of 3,739 tons, left New York, February 27, with a case pil for Shanghai and when sighted in distress was bound from Shanghai to Kobe with a part cargo of ail. Her crew reported that her cargo had shifted during the typhoon which tore every sail to s reds," sting the vessel so that August 7 her yard arms touched the water. She was drift- ing at the rate of ww uiles an hour and ap- peared to be in serious straits so that pass- engers on the Glenogle wagered that she would never again be heard from. Nevertheless, her captain refused proffered aid, preferring to take chances. The Lawhid was at Tacoma, some eight years ago in command of Captain Singer. So far as known she has not been reported since spoken by the Glenngle,

Other than speaking the Lawhill the Glenogle mist with no unusual experience this voyage. She left Tucoma June 4 for the Orient via Russia, mxking Vladivostock in seventeen days, despite the fact that she was running under half pressure owing to the accident to one of her cylinders when last here. She proceeded to Port Arthur, Moji and Hongkong and returned by way of Moji, Kobe and Yokohama and will not receive a new cylinder until she reaches Hongkong this voyage.

MALARIA.

To the Zoological Section of the British As- sociwion Major Ronald Ross told the story of malaria. He showed the part which mosquitos play in its dissemination, and stated that he was convinced the cure lay in the extinction of

the mosquito. Every town in the tropics would in a few years be freed of the insect pest, or at least have them visibly reduced in numbers.

This would be done by simply clearing away every drop of stagnant water through the towns by means of a gang of men maintained for the purpose by the local municipality. He des- cribed the experiments now being carried on in Sierra Leone by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, assisted with a sum of £2,000 subscribed by a West of Scotland
