course. Ping-pong has made its appearance at several dinner parties (of course after dinner) this week. It is a most antusing game to watch and will be a welcome variant to the military novelty of last winter, when we spent our best energies in throwing cards into a hat, in the emulation of Bobs."
JUNG LU..
The favour in which June Lu is held by the Court has made Ting Fu-hsiang irate. He complains of the harsh treatment ineted out to him, whereas Jung-lo, who is equally open to blame, receives no punistinent, and in fact has har promotion. To somewhat assuage the wrath of Tung, one bandred and fifty thousand racis has been remitted to him. This money has been entered as expenditure for military purposes.
BUILDING..
1981, promises to be a record year ip building in the Municipal Extension as far as residential houses are concerned. We counted as many as seventeen new foreignthouses in course of erection this week, and as the foundations of another two are being dug, we shall see ninetech before the New Year. The first houses in the Extension were begun just ten years ago, so that the bricks and noctar of the suburb re- present with fair accurac· the growth of British Tientsin during the decade.
THE . H. A.
The R. Battery of Royal Horse Artillery expects to embark for India on or about the 16th instant. It is understood that strong efforts Care being made to make the home authorities reconsider the decision to send back the XII Battery R.F.A., and the Third Bombay Cavalry. Even as it is, General Greagh has none too many men for the long lines of cominunications' The has to protect, and any lessening of their number in the present conditions of affairs in
the Province violates the dictates of military prulence.
THE PEKING TERMINUS. The Peking terminus at Chien Men was first ne on Tuesday last, and on the same day the rail-head of the new Tung Chow line reached the latter city. It is not generally understood

One of the most amusing bits in the recent theatricals on board of 11.M.S. Goliath was the arrival of a despatch and the opening of the same. A cable length of red tube had to be taken off before the urgert message was got at. Officers and men cheered this admirable bit of Clydesdale, Miss M. E. McGlau, (Engineer) fooling to the echo. The libretto of the play, Clarke, Nelson. "The Forty Thieves." its mounting, and the Cestajo, A. dos l'assos leading role were undertaken by Lieut. Hop-Conaught, Dr. 1. D. wood, brother to the all round.sportsman of the Third Bo. Cavalry who is so well known among ourselves. It was voted universally a record performance for the China Station,
NOTES ON NATIVE AFFAIRS.
THE EXPENSE OF GOVERNMENT.
A Peking dispatch to hand states that it has been computed that, with the proposed reduc- tion of the number of metropolitan officials in the Bix Boards, etc., and other economies to be put into force connected with the so-called reform measures in, Peking, there will be needed only about Tls. 400,000 per annum as salaries for the secretaries, scribes and clerks, etc, of the Six Boards and various, Ministries and Courts. Hitherto the annual expenses of these Boards, etc., amounted to nearly two and a-half times as much..
TO MEET THE COURT. Another Peking dispatch reports that over two hundred high officials belonging to the various Boards, Courts and Ministries in the Capital are preparing to proceed to Kaifeng to meet the Imperial travellers on their arrival there. Of these officials going to Kaifeng, a certain proportion have been officially selected to represnt the respective Boards and Ministries, etc., td which they belong. For instance, each of the Six Board's will send a President, a Vice-fresident, two 1st Class Secretaries, and two and or 3rd Class Secretaries, who are also to be c companied by a staff of scribes and clerks, The constitution of these batches of officials deputed to represent their respective Boards, Courts and Ministries would, bowever, seem to point out that they are not merely meant to meer and welcome the Court at Kaifeng, but are probably intended to conduct the work of the respective Boards, etc, during the sojourn of the Court there.
the reports that disseminated throughout the country that the Emperor will proceed straight on to Peking, after celebrating the Empress Dowager's birth- day anniversary in November next, appear from news received from various reliable sources merely meant to throw dust in the eyes of the sharp-witted foreigner and to stop in- convenient questions as to when the Emperor intends to return to Peking.

MINING IN BZECHUAN,
A native paper publishes a Chungking letter stating that Mr. Archibald Little recently visited Chongtu, the provincial capital of Szo chuan, with the object of conferring with Viceroy Kuci Chun of that city about the opening of a copper mine in the district of Wushanlejen in the sama province, the ormof which is reported to be very rich.-A pative of Szechuan, named Tan, continues the same fetter, has discovered very good anthracite coal in the bills of Chícbjangslen and has entered into partnership with a Frenchman to open the mine. A preliminary capital of Tls. 10,000, has been subscribed--six-tenths of which be- long to Frenchman-to exploit the deposit and see whether it will pay to develop the property on a large scale. Should the property be worth daveloping, the concern" will be made into a company and shares offered to the public AN, C. D. News.
