it was on this account, and through fear of Captain Strachan alone, that Brodis confessed. On the evidence before them, it was absolutely impossible for them to say that poison was administered to the Strach in family by Brodie, neither could they say that phosphorus poison had been administered at all: If there was even the slightest doubt, the prisoner should have the benefit and should be acquitted.

Mr. Van Caylenberg concluded bis address to the jury for the defence at 3.50, having com-, menced at 2.30.

Mr. Fort then addressed the jury for the pro- secution. He went on to ray that the confession nade by the prisoner was a true one and he submitted that Captain Strachan was hardly likely to have used violence to extort a con- fession; if he had used violence, he would have heen careful as to the violence be used. There was no entry in the log-book of Brodie, having been kept in irons, nor had there been any other complaint of force against Captain Strachan. He (Counsel) argued that Brodie was a person who was unreliable and un trustworthy and his evidence, was not to be believed. He had denied the story of the Captain's seizure and it was hardly likely that this story was concocted by the other Envy witnesses. Coming to the medical aspect- that as to whether a ding was administered, it was a difficult thing for all the doctors engaged, because it had been late when they were called in. The salient feature of the case, however, was Captain Strachan's seizure, which was a difficult point for the doctors for the defence. It had been accounted for as a fainting-fit, but he fancied it was something else. The doctors in this case had not agreed, but then scurvy and phosphorus poisoning were difficult to deal with, because some of the symptoms were alike. He argued that there was no conspiracy and that the story of the defence was not to be believed.

The Court here adjourned. This morning Mr. Fort continued his address to the jury for the punsecution, He endeavoured to show that no importance should be attached to the fact that certain symptoms, which were not entered in Captain Strachan's log book, were depased to at the Police Court and in Cour here. That this was not a modern invention of the witnesses was proved by the fact of the symptoms having been referred to carly in the proceedings, by several witnesses and having been corroborated. Proceeding to Dr. Robert- son's evidence, Counsel said that there had certainly been strong feeling in this case between Dr. Robertson and Capt. Strachan, and from the beginning the latter had been inclined

to misinterpret the things said by the latter, and he would ask them (the jury) not to attach too mugh importance to some of the remarks Dr. Robertson had attributed to Capt. Strachan Neither should importance be at- tached to the incident of Captain Strachan having deposited some samples of provisions for analysis with Dr. Robertson in November last. He had done this in order that, if they had been found to be adulterated, he might have been in a position to have brought an action against the people who had sold him the provisions. As to the charge of bribery against Captain Strachan by Dr. Robertson; it would not hold water. He had nothing more to say, except that he hoped the jury would accept the story of the prosecution, and take the proper view of the case..

His Lordship then summed-up. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty.--Straits Times:

GERMAN STEAMERS FOR BOMBAY.

The statement made by our Calcutta corres- pandent that the North German Lloyd Steam- ship Company proposes to run steamers to

Bombay implies the revival of a project which has more than once been memtioned by us. So long ago as February of last year, we stated that early in the new qentury, the German Company would begin a service of steamers from Bombay to Continental and English ports. Various circumstances have delayed the realisation of the scheme. One of the chief causes of postponement has been that the Company preferred first to develop and con solidate its position in the Far East In that object it has been largely assisted by recent heavy increases in the subsidies granted by the German Government. How far it has been successful in capturing the Far Eastern trade the passenger lists testify. The 'German mail' is now the most popular line running from Japan and China through the Canal, Brit- 'ish and American lines still control the Pacife
