If any more of the Sultan of Brunel's terri- tory is to be alienated, it would be much better that it should fall into the hands of Rajah Brooky than into those of the North Borneo. Company. Rajah BROOKE understands that Malayan countries cannot be rushed, that railways running from nowhere to nowhere are never likely to pay, and that Borneo is | not likely to become a profitable investment for any chartered company that does not bleed its subjects. Under Rajah BROOKE THE CRICKET SEASON opens to-day and the country has gone ahead, slowly, perhaps, all the enthusiasts will be hard at it this after but very surely, and the best thing that couldnood in the nets, trying to get into form. South Africa.
The news from South Africa which we publish 'to-day, cannot be said to be of a very reasurring nature, heing simply, at chronicle of disaster froui start to finish. Still, it is no use to cry out when hürt and the best that we can do is to hope that this severe fighting is simply the result of Lord' KITCHENER'S proclamation and will end in the Boers getting tired of the contest. · All the same, however, we wish that the victory had been more on our side at the start, for these constant reverses encourage the Boers to continue the light and more particularly so when one takes into consideration the fact that they are probably much exag gerated when reported in the subdued districts. The calling out of the Natal ..8 6.98 $ 7:58 Volunteers certainly looks bads, for it must mean that the enemy are becoming more active in that direction. We hope that we 19.92 shall have better news ere long and that Commandants BOTHA and SMUTS will have been paid back with interest for the damage 19.20 they have inflicted upon us. One thing we must remember, however, in reading future war news, and that is that the war is now, we presume, being carried on with practical- ly no quarter, for the Boers are aware that they will be tried and dealt with by martial law if captured; hence we inay expect very heavy casualty lists for every engagement.

As for giving up his seat to a lady, I don't suppose he would ever think such an act necessary, and he would as soon think of removing his cigar from his mouth when talking to one of the opposite sex as he would of dispensing with a high collar and gaudy Lic. It is a great pity to see this utter want of politeness, and old buffers life myself feel" pained at it. Surely one loses (nothing in
