CANTON NOTES.
THE NEW WHARF
Auditors.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
CANTON, February 13th. Notwithstanding the determined opposition by the people living in the vicinity, the new wharf has been begun, and is to be pushed forward vigorously. The boats have been cleared away and piles are being driven. The new wharf is, to be built just east of the present line of wharves and in close proximity to the "flower boats."
LIFE INSURANCE,
Many of the Chinese have availed themselves of the offers made by the insurance companies to place risks upon their lives. A day or two ngo a man by the name of Yau died in his residence on Ho Pun street who had insured his life for $10,000 in the Equitable Life In surance Company.
MISSIONARY CONFERENCE.
The Canton Missionary Conference met to day. The attendance was large and a good deal of interest was manifested. Rev. J. J. Boggs read a paper on Yat Yeun, Statesman and Poct." The chief interest centered round. the recent dispatches from Viceroy Tak regard. ing the payment of indemnities. The Viceroy has notified the Consuls that the late troubles were exceptional and the indemnities - were paid to avoid further trouble, but that this. mode of settling trouble will not be regarded as a precedent for the future. Missionaries ahall not be allowed to interfere in behalf of their converts. The Conference appointed-a com mitted to draw up a statement embodying the ideas of the conference on the subject of in- demnities and missionary interference," to be, presented to the Viceroy through the Consuls. The opinion was, very freely expressed that what the Viceroy should be made to under- stand was that the missionaries desired order and not indemnities, That the way to secure order was to severely punish the instigators of the frouble and not to behead a few ignorant.

A WARNING.
We have received the following Government Notification for publication:-
In view of a recent accident involving loss of life, the attention of all persons having oc casion to blast stone is called to the provisions of Section 59 of The Building Ordinance, 1889. The Section is as follows:-
The ceremony of proclaiming the Kingseems to have been muddied in several places. The blast any stone with any explosive substance, "It shall not be lawful for any person to two Singapore papers say that the proclamation in the Colony of Hongkong, unless he shall ceremony there was conducted as a semi-have fully covered over and weighted down the private function, and that the Acting Governor stone to be blasted with sufficiently heavy forgot to pass the word for the troops to cheer timber shield or taken such other precautions when he called for three cheers for his Majesty, | as shall effectually prevent any fragments of while the public and officials shouted. The so the men, being without orders, stood mute Straits Times has another grievance; it was totally ignored with respect to the Proclamation and its representative was denied a list of the names associated with the Acting Governor in the document. At this our southern contem- porary is very indignant.
proclaimed at all. At any rate the ceremony In Labuan, it appears, the King was not was simplicity itself. According to a corres- pondent, the Governor merely sent a notice round to a few of the Europeans-there are only some twenty-nine in the island-and at noon the chosen few repaired to the flagstaff and witnessed the firing of a salute of twenty-one guns, after which the Governor raised his hat and said "God save the King." The Deputy Governor was then told that he might dismiss the Police Guard and the function terminated. The Labuan public-those not notified of the ceremony-feel very wroth that they should have been ignored upon such a memorable Dccasion and one of them has sent us the following :-
DRY TOAST.
Gentlemen! (hem) Goil save the King?”
Verbatim report of Governor Clifford's speech on the accession of the King-- Labuan, 15. 1. 1901.
"Gentlemen, (hem) God save the King I'm pleased with any little thing
Like this, that has the terse true ring,- Clear, dry as you could get it. No waste of words, straight to the core,

some more :)
But when I've heardn Toast before
I've usually "wet" it.
Unfortunately though, H.E.,
Had not provided even Tea,

To where we found that we could get

forc..
It certainly seems strange that invidious dis tinctions should have been drawn in a small place like Labuan. The whole European coin- munity had a right to be present and a right to be notified of any ceremony of the kind. The Labuanites also complain that not even a cup of tea was provided for the ladics. We don't think, ourselves, that a Governor is called upon to treat the public to drinks when pro- claiming a new king, but this perhaps may be the Labuan custom.

ed the attack. Casualties not reported. It is thought by some that this attack was only a feint to draw the authorities attention from other operations.
Labuan has a peculiar way of its own with regard to social relations, due in a great mea- sure to the Barrow confines of the little island and its consequent restrictive influence on limited minds. H. H. noli me tangare evident ly has a poor estimation of the callers at Gov- ernment Huuse, who it would appear merely pay their respects for the sake of the whisky cts, and soda, judging from a circular sent round
on the 6th inst as follows:
To-day's at Home postponed on account of there being no soda water in Labuan."
Within the grounds of Government house there is a fine spring of limpid water which 34.549.28 might for once have quenched the thirsts in place of the more debilitating soda. 19,940.72
