NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Highwaymen.

The gang of highway robbers who are preying upon the Colony are to the fore again and this time have got clean away with a' nice little sum of four hundred dollars and a diamond ring, as will be seen by a report in another column. It is evident that this last robbery is the work of the same gang, for once again we have a man robbed of a large sum of money which he was carrying and which the gang must have come to know of. How they obtain this knowledge it is difficult to say, but it is evident that their plans are carefully laid and that they are well aware not only of the Lime to ex- pect their victim, but of the best place in which to carry out the robbery so as to avoid any interference by the Police.

Of course the diamond ring may lead to

BANISHED MEN FOUND IN A HUNT FOR ROBURRS.

Yesterday an armed robbery was committed at Kowloon City, as reported in another column, and the police were searching high and low for the perpetrators. -

P. S. Cameron, with a party of police was prominent in the search, during which he came the neighbourhood of Lycemun, who were ua across two Chinamen, at an outlying village in dergoing a term of banishment. The sergeant promply "nailed" the offenders and brought them before Mr. Kemp this morning on the charge of unlawfully returning from banish

On the first charge Yan Hing, accountant at the Leung Yik pawashop, Wellington Street, said that on the oth instant, the defendant pawned a pair of leggings similar to the pair which he was charged with stealing.

Chinese police constable 321 said that he lent the leggings to police constable 252. He recognised the leggings in the pawnshop.

HARMSTON'S CIRCUS.

The competition for the prizes in the tug-of- war contests at Harmston's Circus is very kenp and a splendid exhibition" of strength and endurance is given. Last night the regimental team of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers pulled with H.M.S. Centurion (stoker's team) and H.M.S. sidering the fact that Captain Cadogan's own Undaunted pulled with H.M.S. Orlando. Con- regiment (R.W.F.) was competing, he handed over the duties of referee to Caplain, Warren, R.A., who kindly underinok to officiate. There were some long and strong strains on the rope. The Centurions beat their apponents, winning the first pull in a min 473-5 secs, and the second int min 45 sec. They had to work hard for the victory but they managed to register it. The Orlando defeated the Fusilier's team in the first pull in a min. a5 sec. and in the second pull in 1 min 35 sec.

This is the first occasion in the competition on which a sailor's team has defeated a team of soldiers. The sailors know more about

heaving as a rale, but the heavier average weight of a soldier's team quite upsets the

calculations.

None of the teams which have entered so far, have shown much sign of very good training, as the essential sudden drop an the word "pulf" is not done quite as it should be done. With the body almost parallel with the rope a man gives greater assistance to his side than in any other position. In one of the sailor's teams the front man stood erect practically all the time, whilst if he had put more of his weight on the rape it might have made the difference of a victory instead of being pulled away.

These pulls are exceedingly interesting. The teams for to-night are advertized in another column.

A saatinee will be given to-morrow afternoon As per advertisement. The programme is a long and interesting one and will be well worth

seeing.
