INTERESTING TO LADIES. The following, front Triz, should prove in- teresting in the fair sex

Years ago a lady of my acquaintance came to me and told me that she had lately been in partnership with one of the most fashionable dressmakers of that day. She said that she could not make out the accounts of ber partner, but she thought that she was being robbed, and she asked me to meet her and the partner, and to go through the books. The meeting took place, and all the books were friend had been robbed, sa forthconting. My far na I could make out, but I gained some in- sight into the business of a fashionable dress maker. The bills to customers were made out in this way: The actual outgoings connected with a dress were set down, no deduction be- ing made for discount to the dressmaker on price of material. Thus £45 became 450. The 50 was doubled, and loo was charged to the customer. The bad debts averaged about 12 per cent, per annum, which would be a trifle less than 6 per cent, un the actual turnover, if estimated on real cost, I looked through the list of customers who were entered as owing money, and whose accounts were not reckoned as bad debts. But,' suid, surely Lady-and, Mrs.will never be able to pay Their bushands could not pay what they owe. anything like these sums. The dressmaker smiled, and produced another book, in which to the names of many of her customers were attached those of other persons This she explained to me was the private key, and these were the billp yers. How do you know the name? I asked for I should have thought tint the ladies would not have confided them to you? Because payments are made in cheques to me which are handed over to melby the ladies. Why, cbeques?' I asked; why do not the payers give the ladies notes to hand over to you? Because,' she answered, the ladies would spend the notes, and get their friends again to give them money to pay my bill. Even as it is, when they come with the cheques, they often insist before giving me them, that I should-estum them, a note of two and carry the amount to a new account...I could not help thinking what a flutter these would be in fashionable dovecots, were this ledger published.

THE ISTHMIAN COMMISSION.,

The report of the Canal Commission has now been prosented to Congress. The document is a long, one; but we learn from Reuter's sum- mary.that the Commissioners are unanimously in favour of the Nicaraguan route. The report estimates the cost at 200,540,000 dollars, and the cost of the canal by the Panama route at 142,342,579 dollars according to one route, and at 150,378,258 dollars according to another. As between the Nicaraguan and Panama routes the Commission sums up a number of advan Inges favourable to the former, and also states that under the concession given by Colom- bia to the Panama Company Colombia ir not free to grant the necessary rights to the United States except upon conditions made by the company, The Commission fixes the depth of the Nicaraguan Canal at 35ft. mean low water, and the bottom width at 150 ft. with some in-

THE RAND RIFLES,

Among the many points which will have to be considered in connection with the ending of the war in South Africa a prominent place must-Kolls, be given to the question of its fature garrison. On many grounds it will be undesirable to lock up in the Transvaal and Orange Colony many regiments of regular British troops." Nor should any such necessity arise. It will not be forgotten that before the war broke out the Uitlander population of the Transvaal out. numbered the Dutch, and with full opport unity to carry arms the citizens of Johannes | burg ought by themselves to be able to

answer for the peace of the county, the banquet held on St. Andrew's Day the Military Governor of Johannesburg, Colonel M'Kenzie, referring to the subject, announced the decision of the authorities to train and arm the returning citizens. They expected to raise a force of twenty thousand men, to which they. proposed to give the name of Rand Rifles. This body of men he held, would be able to resist any hostile force in South Africa. This plan would facilitate an early resumption of industry without fear of interruption. It is Lange, W. believed that the principle is to be extended Luidskong, M. throughout the Empire, so as to create a Lynch, C. nation in arms without increasing the stand-Lyon, C. H. ing Army. This plan, instead of being a hind- Lenry, C. rance to commerce and industry would rather Lambert, W. s.

Lisettle, A. aid them by improving the physique and the character of the race. It does not mean con- scription, but voluntary training into efficiency for defence. This is one of the great lessons of the present war. The representative of The Morning Post, to whom we are indebted for these details of the Military Governor's speech adds that the banquet on St. Andrew's Day was the most successtul social event of New Johannesburg.

THE NEW FRENCH REMEDY.

THERAΡΙΟΝ.

This succesful and highly popular remedy, as employed in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rostan, Jobert, Volpenu, and others, combines all the desiderata to be sought in a medicine of the kind, and surpasses everything bitherto employed.

THERAPIÓN No. 1, in a few days only, removes all discharges (ion; the urinary organs, effectually superseding injections, the use of which does irreparable harm by laying the foundation of stricture and other serious- dis.

cases.

In dysentery, piles, irritation of the lower bowel, cough, bronchitis, asthma, and some of the more trying complaints of this kind, it will be found astonishingly efficacious, affording prompt relief where other well-tried temedies have been powericss.

THERAPION No. 2, for impurity of the blood, scurvy, pimples, spots, blotches, pains and swellings of the joints, secondary symp toms, disease of the bones, sore throat, and all diseases for which it has been too much a fashion to employ mercury, sarsaparilla, &c., to the destruction of the sufferer's teeth and ruin of health. This preparation purifies the whole system through the blood, and throughly eliminates every poisonous matter from the body.

THERAPION No. 3, for nervous exhaustion, waste of vitality, and all the distressing con sequences arising from early error, excess, residence in hot, unhealthy climates, &c. It posseses surprising power in restoring strength and vigour to the debilitated.

"THERAPION may be procured of the prin- cipal Chemists and Merchants throughout the world. Price in England 2/9 and 4/6. In order ing, the purchaser should state which of the three numbers he requires, and observe that the word "THERAPION" appears on the Govern ment, Stamp (in white letters on a red ground) affixed to every genuine package by order of Her Majesty's Hon. Commissioners, and with
