KEJGER AND STEYN.'
A telegram, dated the llague 3rd instant, says that the Morning Post has published let ters from Presidents Kruger and Steyn. these letters, the Presidents complain that there are too few Boers defend Kroonstad, the new capital of the Orange Free State. The Presidents also state that intervention on the part of the European Powers is only a question of a few days.

Reuter's Agency, in announcing, on the acth ́ult, the despatch of a special force to Rhodesia,|| under Lieut. General Sir Frederick Carrington, intimated that, it would probably proceed to Rhodesia by "a special route." The ordinary route would of course be by the Bechuanaland railway to Bulawayo, and, so far as this line is concerned, it is pointed out that the Kimberley-. Mafaking-Palachwe line will no doubt be available soon after the relief of Mafeking. *
From the necessities of the case, Reuter's Agency understands that, nothing has been definitely decided as to the exact route by which the Rhodesian Field Force will reachs Rhode-Grossman, A. sia, but in the event of the Bechuanaland Rail way, not being open there is every reason to President Hill of the Great Northern an

ADVENTURE WITH A TIGRESS.
Two Tamils out shooting pigs at Bagan Semi, in Perak, on the 29th ultimo, in the dark, fired at and wounder what they thought to be a pig, and then returned home. The next morning they found that it was a tigress. The wounded animal pounced on one of them and brought him down. His companion, who was amed, went to the assistance of his commde and despatched the tigress. The injured man was removed to hospital. ·
A RICH HAUL.
If the Boers were after birds of fine feathers when they ambuscaded Col. Broadwood's pasty. last month they must be congratulated upon the quality and splendour of their bag. A recent telegram says that the bluest blood of Great Britain was represented among the officers of the Household Cavalry (which was part of the force under Broadwood ambuscaded by the Boers The Duke of Teck, eldest brother of the Duchess of York, whose mother was the grandaughter of George III, was one of the Captains. Among the Lieutenants were the young Duke of Roxburgh; the Earl of Wicklow; D. C, Marjoribanks, the only son and heir of Lord Tweedinouth; Gerald Ward, son of the late Earl of Dudley, and his brother,
son of the Ear!
It is interesting to point cut that Portugal has minde no declaration of eutrality in the pre-
sent war.
NEW GUNS.
I am in a position to state, says a London correspondent, that orders were given by the War Office at the end of last week (about 7th | April) for the immediate manufacture of a great number of new guns. From the extent of these orders, it would appear that the re-arming of our batteries of both horse and field artillery is to be proceeded with without delay. The guns will, of course, be of the latest pattern, and will have an enormous range. I learn that one firm-Messrs. Vickers, Maxim, and Co-have entered into so formidable a con- tract that they are about to erect new sheds at their Erith works at a cost of many thou sands of pounds, in order that they may be able to carry out their undertaking within the appointed time. These additions to their works are to be completed within eight weeks. The firm has for some time past been working night and day, the men coming on and going off in three eight-hour shifts, and dwelling accom. modation at Erith, Plumstead, Greenhithe, and the neighbourhood being already exhausted, a serious difficulty will arise when more hands have to be housed.

THE ENGLISH IN EGYPT.
There have been reports of disaffection in Egypt, and as the British press has been reticent on the subject, it is surinised in Europe that the reported revolt of Egyptian native troops may have assumed serious proportions. This surmise, however, appears to be ground- leas, the suspicion on the part of the conquerors appears to have caused a measure of discont. eni among the troops at Khartum. The Cairo Muayad says:-
"The Egyptian officers are dissatisfied chiefly because all newspapers are denied them, with the exception of a couple of journals which are absolutely under British influence. Moreover, it seems as if every one not of English birth is regarded with the utmost suspicion by the au- thorities, and when the soldiers were deprived of their ammunition, open revolt was the result. The men regained their cartridges by force, saying that they must have means to defend themselves against the Dervishes. It was on January 22, when eleven Maxim guns were sent from Kharsun to South Africa, that this occurred. The prohibition of newspapers was, of course, the result of British reverses in South Africa,"
The Cairo correspondent of the Paris Matin writes as follows:-

"The mutiny has been quelled, the cartridges were returned to the authorities, and the ring- leaders will be punished; but the matter is not ended there. Lord Cromer is very much embittered. Only a few days before the revolt, Dowrie, Mrs, D. he had informed the British Government that the native troops were absolutely reliable, and that as many British battalions could be with drawn as might be needed. The awakening has been somewhat rude, especially as blood has been shed. The English try to hide this fact, but 1 can prove it Yet the court martial will be very lenient. Sir Francis Wingate, the Sirdar who has replaced Kitch- ener,

It would be a great mistake to suppose, however, that the Egyptians are likely to rise against the yoke." The French papers, which assert this are altogether wrong. The fellahin care nothing at all about politics, and in the cities the population is sullenly resigned, Only the religious element can cause a serious rebel lion. The Mahdists and the Marabots are still the only dangerous, enemica of English rule on the Nile."
