Lantas, April 30th. The Sultan of Sulu has arrived. here on his way to Singapore. The object of his visit is said to be to solicit England's aid for the purpose of remedying the abuses at the Ameriems in the Sulu Archipelago in imposing customs duties in deliance of the Protocol of 1877.

M. K. 17, Orstens, the Water Authority, announces that, failing further rainfall, on and after to-morrow, the first of May, the water supply, to the city will be curtailed. We cannot grumble at the action of the Water Authority, for it is absolutely necessary to husband our water. but what we do grumble it is the fact that steps have not been taken sooner to provide another large reservoir in order to increase the storage. Our present reservoirs inay, be capable of supe plying the town when we have the usual amount of rain, but a water-supply that is dependent upon nonnd conditions is defer- five and we think that the attention of the Government should have been given to the utter long ago. True, we have had the capacity of our reservoirs in- greased of late and ratch-water drains have been cut in order to increase, the supply to them, but this is not enough. What is required is a new reservoir that can be drawn upon in times of trought and which collens) the water from another series of valleys altögeber distinct from those already drained by the existing ones.

The rear of deaths in the colony for the Omonths of March shows that 23 of the European. and Foreign community dish, 18 from the civil populatus and five hum the military while deaths among the Chinese amounted to 503. including 36 in Victoria (of which 124 were in No. District), and 42 in the Harbour. Chest afection accounted for 17 deaths including five from the European and foreign community.. The Report on the Health and Sanitary Con- dition of the colony for 1890 shows that the estimated population was 259,310. The biths were 1,132, and deaths 6.181, of which 1,434 were from plague. The birth-fale was 43 per 1,000 as against 4.7 in 1898; tlle death rate 239 per 1,000 as against 223 in 1898. The death rates of the different races were:--Whites 125 per 1,000 (162 in 1898); coloured! 283 (336 in 1898); Chinese 24.4 (22155 in 1898, the increas ed mortality being due to plague)

To-day, at noon, an address by past and present schoolars was presented to Dr. Bateson Wright, on his departure for England on a years. leave, in the Central, Hall of Queen's College. The address, which was transcribed on vellunt and illuminated, was presented by the Hon Dr. Ho Kai.

Mr. F. Gomes complimented the club on their sound and flourishing condition and proposed that the accountsshould be passed. Mr. Patel seconded and the proposition was passed unanimously,
The question of entrance fees was then brought forward; the Chairman said that last year many members resigned at the end of the bathing season, The servant's wages, rent and taxes, however, continued during the winter And he thought that jo cents. per month during the seven months was not a sum ar all'out of
proportion to the amount of pleasure that they received during the other five months. He advocated the establishing of an entrance fee above, or equal to, the amount paid by members who had stuck by the club all the year round.
It was proposed that this fec.should be $$ and the Visiting Members fee be done away with. The Kowloon members, not using the launch should only pay $z. After some discus- sion it was decided that the entrance fee should be $2, the members who resigned last year having to pay the same amount.
The following gentlemen were elected as a committee of management for the ensuing year-Messrs. M. J. Patel,. F.. Gomes, J. R. Burgess, S. D. Kolenwall, W. Moore, with Mr. Jas. Edwards to act as secretary.
It was then decided that the launch should start running on the 15th proximo.
The meeting concluded by a vote of thanks being proposed by Mr. Masters and carried unanimously to the chairman and secretary for the services they had rendered the club.
The proceedings then terminated.
