THE TRAMHORSE.

Winter Manœuvres at Aden. Mauceuvres inland have been sanctioned for The Singapore Free Press, of October 4th, the Aden Garrison cavalry and infantry next publishes the following
***Government Far notified the conibus, and tramway companies that they may riquisition: their horses (Renter's telegram.)
I'm afraid that I know how to whistle-I'm
afraid I've a bit of Wheares That I'm little but skim bone and grisile-
That it's vain to depend on my knees That my eye has lost some of its brightness
That I am not as young as of yore But the Government, still, bave decided that
I'm game for a slap at the Boer
We're the bores for work; and, albeit we are
not for show]:
We're three-quartors stiff perseverance, and one
• quanter slow dogged "go.”**** There's little that's equine about us, still we
reom to be suited for war And I'm practising anorting and stamping in
the hope of a slap at the Boer.
I'm used to lean forward a trifle, and to step
by a pull on the trace,
N
I suppose it will give me some trouble-But
hope I'll get into their ways. But there's one thing that troubles me sorely.
Of this I'm decidedly sure; m That a transhorse will wait for the tinkle of bell
tre he goes for a Boer. GUNGAMEDA
You may break us of some of our habits, In - fact you may drill us full well,
But there's no self-respecting old tramhorse
would budge without hearing a bell. Without this you might think we were shitkers
But you won't lay this charge at our door, If you give us a few tram-conductors to tinkle
the charge at the Boer,
I'm afraid I don't Innk like a war-horse and 1
fear I'm a methodist born I'm afraid that I'm three quarters habit and that
most of my fire has gone wil There'll have to be some innovations in the
fighting regime of our corps,
But the Government still think me useful, so

SILLA, September 19th.
It is quite true that only Mask 11 ammunition is to be supplied for the use of the troops going to South Africa.
The idea seems to be that, as shooting of the Mark 11 bullet at long ranges is slightly better than that of the Duni-Dum, it is a more suit-

Admiral Dewey was timed to amive in New York on the morning of a8th September. Great preparations are being made for his reception. A remarkable piece of newspaper enterprise is the greeting the New York World has arranged for the Admiral. The World has sent tele- grams of over thirty words each to fifteen American consuls, making a circult of the world, asking them to telegraph some sentiment of over fifteen words regarding Dewey's arrival, The object of the sentiments being called for from fifteen consuls is to represent the fifteen guns in the Admiral's-ialute.
