· (Delayed in Transmisjon;) BRITAIN AND RUSSIA TROUBLE AT HANKOW,
ONE hundred men from the Long Volunteer Rifles Linye volunteered at the Cape. Their offer no doubt accepted by the Government by A TELEGRAM from Venice states, that the Duchesse de Baufremont, de Leroux, is now in prison in that city, having been extradited from Switzerland on a charge of forgery. The accusation relates, it appears, to some false document manufactured, it is alleged, by the Duchess and an Italian Priest, who is also in prison, with the view of assisting in carrying out a matrimonial scheme. AUSTRIA is now experiencing a period of sharp political repression such as is only possible in a non-Parliamentary State. The Press is sub- ject to more ruthless confiscations than has been the case for many years past, while the police are unceasing in their endeavours in repress all political demonstrations by main force. The law, too, which fully provides for all such poltical emergencies, is employed as a means of coercion. Dr. Adler's sentence of month's imprisonment was simply due to his requesting the commander of a force of mounted police not to ride quite so roughly into the middle of a crowd. Another Labour leader has been sent to prisen for six weeks for criticising the tactics of the police on the same, occasion The strict preservation of public order is, of course, necessary enough, but it seems as if the Authorities were rather overdoing it at present. As no doubt an account of the Sundunt of damage done to H.M.S. Bonaventure when be stranded if Korniloff Bay would prove of interest, a representative of the Hongkong Telegraph paid a visit to No. 1 Dock of the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Co.'s establish- ment at Kowloon, where she is at present undergoing a complete overhaul. It will be remembered that she put into Yokosuka after the accident to be patched up so as to enable her to come down to Hongkong to be repaired, While there she was docked, the wooden alicathing repaired and cement run in between. the wood and the broken shell plates, so that it was necessary to remove this cement before the full amount of damage could with cer tainty be ascertained. This has been done and the full extent revealed, showing dents and rents on both sides, extending from the fore bulk-head to the boiler-room bulk-head while in places the outer shell plates are touch ing the ship's false botton, which has also. been rent here and there. The bulk-heads of the shell riom, fore and aft, the floors, frames, etc., have also been buckled and will require. to be removed and some plates renewed. On the port side tub shell-plates have been torn asunder by the violence of the contact with the rock. It is estimated that the repairs will take

It has been slated to become buckled, and so worse than useless, me by a member of the Executive Council that.
