EXECUTION OF A NOTABLE BANDIT.

The noterious outlaw Gordhana, the hero of „many daring exploits, has been hanged in the "district gnol at Agra, his appeals to the high court and to the licut-governor having been rejected. From a very early hour thousands of wended their way up to the hillocks overlooking the enclosue wp to the heat stood, and took up advantageons points of view. Punctually at the appointed hour Gordhana was fed into the enclosure, surrounded by a strong guard. He looked very fit and cheerful, and was chatting freely with those around him. He mounted the gallows with a firm and,

step

od. dressing the crowd that had assembled to see hini, said "Ram, Ram," and told them not to mourn for him as he was only meeting the fate he deserved. With grim humour he asked the gaol officials to fire a salvo in his honour. He stood firm while the cap was being drawn on and the noose adjusted, but asked the hang man not to hurt his beard. In another instant the signal was. given.. Death was instan-

taneous.

A MAN MOBBED AND DROWNED.

The other day, in broad daylight, a serious riot occured at Seraniganj, resulting in the death of one man. A number of Muhamina dan schoolboys from the Madressa-i-Ganj had on altercation with one, Anunto Singh, the lessee of a ferty at which the boys were cross- ing. They set upon him with their umbrellas, some of them with bamboos, bricks, and any thing they could pick up, and severely as sauked him." Aninto being outnumbered, without anything to defend himself with, tried to escape, but he was followed, up, driven into the river, and drowned. The police had the river dragged, but the deceased's body was not resovered until the following afternoon.

MARK TWAIN,

WITTY SPEECH AT THE NEW VAGABOND CLUB. Mark Twain and his wife and Miss Jean Clemens were the guests of the New Vagabond Club at a banquet at the Holborn, Restaurant June 29th.

Mark Twain, replying to the toast of "The Guests," proposed by Mr. George Grossmith, sail the mission of humour was to make people reflect. He believed in a grave and solemn background for his humour. Mr. Grossmith had said that when he heard his first lecture in London years ago he took note. That was just

like Mr. Grossmith. He took whatever he could get.

Talking of momlity, the mords taught from the pulpit were only theoretical morals, but he, if he had the opportunity, would like to teach practical morality. He would bring in tempta tion and let the the pupils commit the sins,

When a boy, he stole a water melon. He look it away to a secluded place to eat it. When he got there he found it was a green one. So he asked himself, "What shall I do? What would George Washington have done? George Washington-the only American who never told a lie." He took that water melon. back.

At an elevation of 400 yards from the bridge of the Jauregiberry the bauleship Carnot could be observed at distances varying from five to as railes, whilst at the longer ranges of view, the battleship could only detect the balloon by means of powerful electric reflectors.

- THE HAGUE, 29th June. Sir Julian Pauncefote, in an interview withi Lafia's representative yesterday, Intimated that he intended to retire from the British Ein- bassy at Washington, next Aprit. After the. Peace Conference, which he expects to end about the middle of July, Sir Julian intends to spend some time in England.

As to the work of the conference, it seemed to him that the technical committees would report that the Russian proposals were imprac ficable. Sir Julian, however, thought that an agreement on the subject of the control of armaments was possible outside the Peace Conference, and that the Conference night make a declaration in this sense. On the whole, in view of the strong manifestations of all na tions in favour of peace, no Power would at present increase its military strength except in fear of actual war.

THE BELGIAN REVOLT.

BRUSSELS, June 29th. The city has now been proclaimed by the authorities in a state of siege. Everywhere shop windows are to be seen broken, and the utmost alarm prevails.

It is alleged that some of the gendarmes who charged the crowd last night were drunk. He thanked the new Vagabond Club for their hospitality. He did not know what the Old Vagabonds were, but he believed the New Vagabonds were the old ones going through a process of reform. He hoped they would take his system of practical morality to their hearts and take it home with them...

STRANGE RUMOURS FROM

AFGHANISTAN.

A rumour is current that a few Europeans disguised as fakirs have arrived in Badakshan by way of Swat and Bajour, and that the governor has been' ordered to send them to Cabul under escort. A still wilder report is that the Amir has agreed to make over Badakshan to Russia in lieu of Bokhara. On the other hand, a fracas is reported to have taken place some time ago between the Amir's sepoys and the Russian soldiers at a place not far from Herat, several persons being killed and wounded on both sides.

TROUBLES IN AFGHANISTAN. Reports from Cabul state that certain fanatical mullahs are busy inciting the Gizais and such Duranis as are hostile to the Amir to rebel against him. They insist that as Abdul Rahman Khan, is an ally of the Kafirs, therefore he is himself no better than a Kafft. They are said to be acting on the instigation of one of the refugee pretenders to the throne. On the other hand, the Amir, as always, is keeping a sharp eye on the mullahs, and is said to have sent an agent to Tirah to report the movements of Mullah Said Akbar and to watch closely the correspondence and terms of the settlement between the Afridis andthe British government.

BURDWAN SUICIDE.

Letters by the late Mr. Windsor,

Jeft district and sessions judge, who committed suicide at Burdwan by shooting himself with a revolver, disclose the reason why the unfors tunate gentleman took his life. It appears that Mr. Windsor went home with the prospect of marrying his deceased wife's sister. The lady had, however, inherited a fortune and the refused to become Mr. Windsor's second matri monial venture. Mr. Windsor was so sorely disappointed at the failure of his suit that he resolved upon suicida. The late Mrs. Windsor. died in child-birth

DRUSSELS, June 29th, to p.m.

A fierce strugle has taken place this evening in the Grand Place between a crowd of fully 2,000 Socialists and the troops, who have been called out from the barracks.

The climax of the scene seemed to have been reached when the mounted gendarmerie made a furious charge upon the mob, beating. them back with their sabres and inflicting many injuries.

The

uncontrollable, however, and the troops fired upon them no less than seven times, several falling dead or wounded before the fusillade.

The Socialists had evidently come prepared for a desperate struggle, for they defended themselves with revolvers, and, seizing on the tramcars, upset them across the streets, so as to form barricades against the charges of the troops.

ANTWERP, June 29th.

The Swedish Schoolship, with the second son of the Crown Prince on board, arrived to-day Fat Antwerp. The merchants are preparing a great banquet, and the King will receive the cadets to-morrow, though the troubles at Brus- sels may interfore.

A general strike, however, has only been averted so far owing to the general prosperity of business throughout the country.
