South Drive from, Crosscut No. 1.-Driven 17 feet, ninking a total length of 87 feet. This was driven 18 feet in April instead of 23 feet as stated in that report. It was coming on the lode but turned westerly with a view of culting the foot walk.
The country is so broken up here that it is impossible to tell with certainty whether this drive has cut out of the lode or not, but, in any event, the rock it was driving through during the month is of little or no valne,

A Deputation from Ceylon. Mr. Chamberlain on Juno.23rd received at the Colonial Office a deputation from the Aborigines Protection Society, who put for onward alleged grievances of the natives of Ceflon against the recent land ordinances and the administration of justice generally in the island. After the case of the deputation had been stated, Sir. West Ridgeway, the Governor of Ceylon, replied observing that the Aborigines Protection Society were acting in an ex parte statement, nearly every item of which was without foundation. Mr. Chamberlain also re plied, expressing the hope that the society would avoid giving a party complexion to any of their representations. They must be con vinced from what had passed that the object of the Government in the legislation complained of had been to protect the natives of Ceylon and not to oppress them. After entering into details in vindication of the land ordinances, he regretted that he was unable to agree to the request of the deputation for a special inquiry. lie had complete confidence in the Goven ment of Ceylon, for whose action lat was pre pured to accept full responsibility.

Some good ore was developed in this crosscut but it was passed, through, and broken up country come into of much the same general character as was encountered in crosscul No. 1, and South drive, (bearing westerly), from crosscut No. I.
From these developments it appears the hanging wall of fate No. 2 is poorly defined at. this level, so far as they go, and hence the extent of the good ore body here is the more difficult to estimate.
