These fought with the troops several times but were worsted with great loss. The affected districts are now placed under strict military surveillance.

AN EXHIBITION OF SPANISH GRIT

Manila, July 7th. Lieutenant Martinez and twenty two Spanish soldiers who have held the little fortress of Baler, on the East coast of Luzon, against the insurgents for over a year, came into town yes. tercdy. They met with a hearty recaption, as may well be understood, in view of what they have done,

The Kinder Persecution...

A large number of Spanish residents in Manila went to meet them, and their joy at meeting their compatriots, when they had

IN THE PHILIPPINES.

(From Manila Papers.) THE GLORIOUS FOURTH"--". MANILA, July 5th. Scenes about Minila yesterday were of very gay and festive nature and every Ameri- cnn, was celebrating the anniversary of the „* Glorious Fourth? with great enthusiasm and Patriotic feeling. Several independent pro. rammes had been arranged to take place at different times during the day,

The streets of Manila presented a gay and festive appearance, everywhere the American Lolors, flashed out their message of liberty, equality and fraternity. Here and there too. the British ng intermingled its folds with those of America, foretelling a day when the blood of the Anglo-Saxon, as well as the glowing color of their flags would be intermingled in some deadly struggle for the upholding of their * mutual principles of justice and liberty. The Spanish Commissioners, who were charged to negotiate with the Filipinos for the release of the Spanish prisoners, still in their hands, were very kindly treated and the revolu tionary Govemment, in their turn, nominated a Commnission to meet the Spanish one and to discuss the matter.
