Shanghai, April 10th. At about 5 o'clock this morning a disastrous fire broke out on the premises of a pawn broker, named Yu Way-ching, in the Peking Road. The first alarm was given by the man on the watch-tower in the Louza district, and Inspector Wilson of the Police, with all his were quickly followed by the various brigades. available men, was at once on the spint. They and lines of hose were Inid at both the front and back of the burning building with a smart- ness which does our local Breinen consklerabile credit, Fortunately, there was very life breeze, and the various streams of water had soon full play upon the flames and contined them within a small radios. At the time the Police and brigastes reached the spot not soul was observable, "about it who had connection with the then. doomed premises, and it was not until an hour afterwards, when the fire was under control, that any information, was obtained by the Police as in the ownership of the premises Subsequently the manager of the shop was found, and his story disclosed something out of the ordinary run of such outbreaks. I was to the effect that he and his assistants retired to rest at about 10 o'clock last night, and he was awakened by a squall of time. He at once called those around him, and alter some the found that the tinies were proceeding from a godown where a large number of pledged gunds were stored, and finding it was hopeless to save them they quickly left the premises, There was no stave therein, and the origin of the fire to him and his assistants at that time was a complete mystery. We have ascertained that the shop and its contents were insured in the Manchesis Office for Tis. 30,000. Police are furthering theic enquiries with a view to obtain the cause of the outbreak.--China
