The Korumin describes the rescue by her husband of a Japanese woman from drowning, According to the Japan Gasetie's translation, it seems there lives in Sumiyoshicho, Yokoba ma, a head coolie of the Nippon Yulan Kalaha named Yamazaki Sakuzo, who, as well as his wife, is very fond of sake. On the evening of the 24th alto. the couple took to drinking as asual, and then began to quarrel with each other. The result was that the wife escaped out of the house about half past eight o'clock and had not returned home after many hours had elapsed. TRE HARDOON-BELILIOS CASE. The Hardoon-Belilios case was again brought before the court, notice having been given of an application for leave to appeal to the Privy Council against the decison of the full court on February 28th, when an appeal brought by E. A Hardoon was dismissed with costs. It was on the 19th May last that judgment was given against Mr. Hardoon, who brought-an- action against the Hon. E. R. Belilios, contend- ing that the latter was the true owner of certain shares and was liable by agreement or other wise to indemnify hlin in respect of all calls on the shares,
་
The Hon. H. E. Pollock (instructed by Messrs. Mounsey and Brutton) appeared for Mr. Hardoon and Mr. E. Robinson (instructed by Messrs. Deacon and Hastings) for Mr. Be--- filios.
The Chief Justice said it might shorten matters if he stated what the view of the Court was. They were quite willing, of they had the power, to grant leave to appeal, but they felt some doubt whether they had power to grant such leave, and they thought it would be more satisfactory if an order was taken calling on the other side to appear and show cause why leave should not be given.
וי
Mr. Pollock pointed out that there was nothing in the rules about giving notice to the other side, but ultimately the suggestion of the Court was adopted, and Monday week was fixed for the hearing of the action

Tarix EDITOR OF, tux "iloxukung Taliokapu, SIR-The latter you published in your issue of the 9th inst, under the above heading is to my mind very much to the point and your corres -pondent seems to be in real earnest. I am a comparitive youngster out here, but from the changes that have taken place during my time, I am convinced that "Labor's estimate of the future is a pretty correct one. We shall be absolutely at the mercy of the Asiatic During the past five years the Europeans have been much crowded out in this British Colony, and to-day one has to submit to any amount of inconvenience, not to say indignity because of the carors and. folies of
our former legislators. Protective measures in the interests; of Europeans will sooner or later have to be adopted and it would be well if our present governor would make a patient study of this subject before he gets too busy with the general routine work; as the longer the matter is neglected the more serious the position becomes for all parties.

ANGLO-SAXON SUPERIORITY: TO WHAT IT IS DUE,
By Edmond Demplius. This works as geached a tenth edition in France, and even before it was translated into English, had a considerable vogue in Great much because of what the auther has to say Britain. It will interest Americans, not so about the United States, but because it offers a paint of view which to most Americans is entirely new, exhibits the Anglo-Saxon as the Frenchman sees him. Many, if not all of the traits that M. Deinolins has discovered in his typical Anglo-Saxon are to be found also in the American, and when due allowance is made for exaggeration the average American will allow that this, French artist has drawn a tiderably accunde portrait of Uncle Sam.
EXTEM RANEOUS ORATORY FOR PROFES MİONAL AND AMATEUR SPEAKERS,
By James M. Buckley, This work is the outgrowth of lectures delivered several years ago by Dr. Buckley be. fore theological seminaries and law schools. The fact that the lecturer was simultaneously requested to prepare a book by the faculty of a law seluval and by a committee appointed to prepared aourse of study for Methodist
ministers some inslication of the broad, practical utility, which it was thought that such benk would serve. Few men are better qualified than the able editor of the Christian Advocate to give such intelligent and helpful
advice in matters of this kind.
U. S. AMBASSADOR TO LONDON.
It has beconte a very graceful Anscrican custom, says an American exchange, to send to London as ambassadors men who possess not only first- rate capacity for sach diplomatic business as may have to be transacted, but who also repre sent what is best in American culture and character, along with the ability to make an ifter dinner speech or a public address. Thus we have been sending stick men in succession as Mr. Lowell, Mr. Phelps, Mr. Cincoln, Mr. Bayard, and Colonel Hay. Mr. Chante is a worthy sucessor of these distinguished Americans and his selection has been highly complimented by the British press. Happily, he goes to London at a time when there are no embarrassing.com- plications in the diplomatic relations of the two great English-speaking countries, There are always questions of some moment pending, and Mr. Choate will doubtless find work on his hands more serious, than making after-dinner speeches; but he will be aided by the good dis- position that exists alike in the State Depart inent and in the British Foreign Office to maintain cordial relations and to find prompt and honourable solutions for all unsettled issues.

The New South Wales police have arrested a man near Grafton yesterday, on a charge of theft. The man is named Burke, and is be- lieved to be identical with the man who had been a patient in the Ipswich hospital, where he became intimate with another patient named Lundey, who subsequently died. When Lun- dey died several of his letters were missed, and these were found in Moran's paddock after the murders had been discovered: Burke was known to have been in the Gatton district about the time of the murders, and the police have been since anxiously trying to trace him. He is said to bear considerable resemblance to Burgess,
Burke seems to be thoroughly conversant with all the details of the murder.
February 14th.
It is now stated that Burgess will be taken by the police to the various places which he says he visited on the Downs between the 25th and 27th December. Every effort will be made to test the truth of his statements, and in the event of them proving to be untrue the police will proceed against him on the charge of being concerned in the Gauton murders,
February 16th.
The latest stages in the Gatton_mystery are unimportant. The police are taking Burgess over the ground alleged to be traversed by him at the time of the murders, but with what results is not yet published. The object of this is to see if he can be identified by any of the persons who claim to have seen a man near the locality when the outrage was com mitted.
It will be remembered that Burgess was arrested on suspicion of the murder of a man and two girls i Gatton in Queensland under most revolting and mysterious circumstances, -Ed. H. K. T
