United States troops had carried two of the Philipino positions and had advanced their lines. This may or may not mean much. We have no news as to how far the American lines had been advanced or what positions had been captured. It may mean that the outposts out several miles and have captured the principal posts of the Philipino army surrounding Manila, or it may be that a couple of unimportant outposts have been rushed and the lines pushed forward a few hundred yards.

Mr. Wilkinson commenced his lecture by supposed to have been an invention and not an stating that playing cards were generally introduction into Europe, but that he would give arguments that went towards proving that the English playing cards were taken from the Chinese. In most school books it said that playing cards were invented as a pastime for the mad King Charles VI, but on reference to the Treasury books of that date it is found that the money was given for paint- ing the cards, therefore they must have been in use prior to that time. The French had adopted them from the Germans who had taken thien from the Italians, where they were introduced by Marca Paolo on his return from the Far East. The lecturer who had a pack of the usual Chinese cards, which are to be found all over China, forcibly illustrated how the court cards and suits had originated from these Chinese cards. The objection that the Chinese had only three suits instead of 4, as in the paris more especially the northern part of China, which faredPaolo visted a pack with four sults was generally used. f the old tally cards which preceeded those now in use, there were 22 cards numbered from zero to 21, the zero card being called the fool; the property of this card was that it could be substituted for any other when required to form a sequence. The American loss of twenty killed and one hundred and twenty-five wounded certainly gives one the impression that the engage ment was a hot one, but here again the nature of the ground and, the positions oc- cupied by the belligerents have to be taken into account. If the losses occurred in open fighting then they cannot be considered to be very large, but, if the Americans were protected by entrenchments, then the loss is curtainly severe. From the wording of the telegram it would seem that the Philipino loss was greater than that of the Americans, but at the_sand_time it must-bo-remembered that a few dead and wounded men spread over a battlefield make a large show, and until de finite news is received it is useless to try to judge of the extent of the Philipino casualties.
