Taking the two into comparison the the difference is great. Men in the world there-billas, and to pamp out the Targe quantities of fore are hard un to make relibood. At the time it was believed that 'Commodore Watson's expedition was about to make a 'der, cent on the coast of Spale; the Spanish authori iles began making extensive military preparas tions in the Bay of Gibraltar. A couple of guns were dragged up behind the Queen of Spala's Chats, commanding the nör front. These works it was thought, even if Intended for the Americans, might become not a danger, but an eventual annoyance to Gibraltar, and at any tate were an intringement of the treaty of ces- sion, stipulating that no gdos should be placed within range of the Rock. Sir R. Biddulph reporting the matter home, strong representa- tions were made at Madrid, and an 'x'result mil works were discontinued. i THE LACQUER BUSINESS.

In connection with the future prospect of the lacquer trade in Japan, the Osaka Riahi wiltes as follows-Baring the relgo of the Taku. gawa Shoguns, the business in lacquer ware was encouraged by the Government and trabf- actions were brisk. After the Revolution of Tshis, however, a large quantity of lucquer trees were cut down and eliber mulberry trees or tas plants were cultivated to their place. The change is particularly noticeable In Alxo, wher

While the produc los of lecquer sap has greatly diminished in Japan, great quantities have been brought in from Chins, the quality of which is far leferler to that of Japan. Moreover, a paper lesita- pre-ion of lacquer ware has recently been invented

in Germany and this affects the lady here, It is useless to disgalse the fact ibat Japan new has strong rivals in the lacquer trade. not only injures the interest of the mer. chanti concerned, bat it affects the general finances of the palcu, It is reported that the regaliemesta of Japaneer minofacturers of lacquer wares yearly exceed 200,000,000 mommé; yet azly 30,000,000 momma are sup- plied from island districts; the rest is Imported. Another point which must be mentioned is that | lacquer trees require at least ten years belote they can be expected to give sap of good quality, Some panies attribute the interiority in modern Japanese larquer ware to carelessčesa in mand. faciare rather than to the use of Chins Iscquer sap. These contend that the merchants are to blame and that la their anxiety to command profts in the present they are indifferent to the lature. We are very glad to hear that upwards of 1,500 Isequer ware manufacturers in Osaka have formed themselves into a union with a view to Imprare and develops the busineis.-- Kobe Herald.
