YEH CHING CHONG AND THE
"CHINA GAZETTEN
THE "CALETTE” REPLIES.
Scared, no doub", by the unpleasant bints of deportation, clontos ap of business la Shanthat, elc, recently made to these colemas, eug estim
the brothwind, eight mong the outposts. We miele pogubly be that without being chille ged, trough that wi improbable. Neither ale would be Bicely to fire he form we could hire time to proclaim ouT nationally. It was periible that a stray 'shot, almed by the one side at the other, might forget Itsell and fatrude on as without any latraduction, But we went on, perhaps all the more laterested because there was a raggestion of danger that spics of danger so deir to the Englishman heit, for the foreigners say that all Englishmen are mad, some mudder than others but all mand.
So we plonged into the screb, dripping wes, kacedeep in sloppy mud and fallen leaves, and almed as near as we could guess to strike * He stream that comes down past a grout, straggling blity Chiccic cemetery. We got lo to the cemetery by wriggling through a highsuld about Mr. Chlog Cheng and bis fellow barbed wire fence, a most execrable thing. The Cemetery is not easy to traverse, for it consista of several square miles of law andalatians, covered with iftile nondescript heaps of masonry, to various degrees of transition between the the Chinese horse-shot-shaped grave and
All there Roman Gatholic cross-headstone. graves have closses; I belleva all Chinese in Manila have to adopt Christianity, and many have Spanish bepilimal names-Marcelina Serafina de Asur con Kwong Fok, sad so on. One grave had a big hinese Inscription, with a translation (I suppoïe) giving in Roman letters the name Gregorio Eugenio Francisco Chung, which is name that seems to drop with a dull, dend thud.
These graves would be bad enough to get cast anyhow, but they are so much the worte by season of belog are goown with bushes and weeds to a height of two or three feet, an in- tricate tangle of closely matted 'anarez, zadalog ncoses, they network, and occasional Im penetrable blocks of bilir, with ankle-twisting plifalls and shleiscesping structures of all shapes And sizes, Ingeniously concealed under the folf age, and later presed with poole of mad and streams of water. The whole, so densely wooded as to almost completely shut oal the sky, and the cool reeze which the rain brought or should not say the brerz brought the rain Anyhow, we had no breze la that cemetery; it was close, silling, dark, soaking wet, smelly, and altogether abominable underlost. And the shrieking cicada, sleging to the rain, screeched a deafening chorus of derision as we gave it up and turned back, for we found Spaalsh sentinels Just abend, and we could not afford to be caught prowling there if we could help it. So we foundered and splashed and threaded our way back in where we had left the pony-carriage, and as the rain streaked down our backbones and the water in cur boots agal bed, we chanted a doleful dust, not original hot highly appropriate. Perhaps the Chinese e metery may be entside the houndaries of Galangato; perhaps la San Lazaro, perhaps in Marpajo, possibly within the jurisdiction of Caloocan; I do not know, and the
render does not care.
We tried igale, up anolber part of the amall stream. We wided up the river bed, plunging and scrambling in sandy and muddy bottom, with a depth of water varying from a few inches 10 two feet or mere, and dense jungle above and around, Nobedy or uld see ss, and the course ought to take us sight through the lines. Wading, splabing, bigodeiing, crawling, like veritable coats cartelver, we pressed forward steadily, anobserved. We had made a great discovery an unguarded path. It was cot much of a path, not a bicycle-track nos a race-course by say means; but it was a way through, and a căreial, stealthy fighting force might have stalked the enemy along this route, might have got round and
arprised the pickets, cut them eff perhaps allently in the night, and might have stolen a march on the fog, along this bejangled back. Such is the way of walare in the jungle; so the Malays, the Tonklaere, the somalland probably the Cubans do their skirmishing, through trashwood well-nigh Impenetrable, creeping lang ny watercourses so closely concealed by foll gear to be all but subterranean. Not a word above a whisper; not a chance to stand upright; covered from head to fost with a thick, slimy disrobe of khiki-coloured mad, acquired not purposely but purely as an incident of the pligrimage. If ws conld go thar, so could Eghting force; and to, with knowledge of the Eeighbourhood (hich we had not) could perhaps go a whole army of Indians, familiar with every foot of the ground, slinking silently like snakes In the grass, ready to raise their heads and strike at the proper time and place-but ready also to be prarastarely discovered and kiled ilke rats In a trap. This is how Manila is attacked. This Is how band of dare-devil Flipinos start, in the night or the dark bour just before dawn stationing three or four men away off, straight to front of the tired-act Spanish pickets, to fire a few shots for reality and a bunch of Chinese crackers for make-belleve, never detected if an occasional genuine bollet really hits a peor Cazador: wille a gang of the little bronz: mud-hoppers, with aifles and heavy kalves, silde and squlim and borrow their way, in the dark like so many teredos esling their Way into a ploc' log. We, not knowing the Jungle lealpaths nor the Spanish posfilous at all În details discovered one track; il we had been In a fighting fores, I suppose we might have discovered others, and might have got our men strangly planted for a very dangerous attack: Or, an the other hand, we might have falled completely and perished in the attempt. The spice af danger" above mentioned is healthy and Invigorating, but to have things too highly spiced is not hygienically desirable.
The san bad set, and soon we would be la the dark li wa did noi hurry home, We had got
beyond the Spanish pickets, into an interme.

ble Nlagpo friend, Mr. Yeh Ching Chong bas tadicted a satvelllug epletis to the editor of our erentex contemporary, in the hope obviously that our contemporary, out of "puse cussedress! and feelings of rivalry would go for The China But for onca tha wily Gazella baldheaded. The Chinese reputation for varsclly is not so high that we can believe any Chinaman's assertion off-hand. But it is good, nevertheless, to lesin that Chlog Chong, has now been pai info better s'ate of mind than he was last week and is anglour to pose as a much lejered man, but one still working in the cause of law and order with his less enlightened countrymen. Another epistle on the recent riets has been addressed to one of our moising contemprica. by Mr. W. V. Drummond, the regular legal adviser to the Chinese, which is a most plaasl ble and claver place of composition. But it fo not convincing, as the mtlo palat, the innuendo Guild's land without paying the Fle price for it, that the French attempted to take the Ningpo is not loaded on fict. The French, as wo stated lasted last Tuesday, were willing to pay the assessed value Tis. 5,500 i maw, for the cemetery, The Ningpo men never wilted to discuss the price, but Interposed a non dossimus at the start and raised a riot which bad to be quelled by force with consequences that we all agree are deplorable so far as the loss of life is concerned.
Mr. Drummond, like the clever advocate be un-
doubtedly is, concedes all he can, even that the severe acilor of the Freech was not unjustified in the clicemstances, but it will asrprise many people to learn that Mr. Drummond writes as an independent person la the matter, when bis officiat connection with the Total and Chinese authorities is so well-known. His suggestion to "arbitrate" is clever and Instdions, but we do not imagine for a moment that the bait will take. There is noiblog that we can see to arbitrate. The question is entirely one for stilement between the diplomats of the two countries com. cerned Ckixa Gordite.

THE ANTI-MISSIONALY TROVILKI. A wire was sent to the N. C. Datly News four days ago lotimating that sortons trouble had again occurred in Central Szechuan and that one French priest had been captured by a band of brigands who were holding him as a hostage. The French priest, M. Fleury, is unfortunately pill a prisoner, and I much regret to have to add that there is a strong feeling sbrord that he will only be saved with difficulty. The reverered gentleman's comrade, M. Loals, managed to effect his escape in a wounded coadhion and is now, it is said, on hix way to Chungking by a round-about route. Just how many natives werd killed on this occasion of how much property was destroyed or stoles the writer cannot al present s.7, but the whole occurence is anqacailonably of a sad and start)-

THE REAL RINGLEADER.
As was intimated in my last, the man respon. sible for the whole affair is named Yo Man-tzo. Ya has for many years' heen under a ban, and be now knows well that the mandarins, con- stantly and vigorously pressed by M. Haas, are bent appo capturing him. His career of crime is a long one, and the Roman Catholic Christians have suffered severely kom bis daring lawless- ness. The scoundrel ought to have been arrested years ago, and the present crisis is entirely due to the pestilent Imbecility of the mandarlow who allowed him to remain at large,

The explanation of Mr. Gaschen, staten tha London Daily Mail, un to be fillare of H M.S. Terrible in the recent test run to Gibralter and back is awaited with much faterest to naval cl-cles The official programme for the trial as giren to the public was to be so outward run of 10,000 ladicated horse-power, and a homeward | 100 at 15,000 horse-power, representing speed of about sṣvenicen and twenty knots respectively. The ilme taken over the outward rus was stvenly.two hours, or a speed of 16.7 koots, while the homeward rus look about eighty hours, or a speed of about 6fteen kaots only.
This failure of the Terrible to come up to expectation has already led to a good many opinions being expressed by experts and others, and Mr. W. Allan, M.P.. in givinɛ hlíviewi on the subject to the Daily Mail says:---
"Let it be kept in view that the designed power of this cruiser is 25,coɔ barse-pɔwarn, and her speed was to be 215 kuois, so that the homeward ran of 15 knois represents barely more than a ball-power trla!,
