ORIGIN OF THE JINRIKISHA.

Though the flasikisha undoubtedly first saw the light in Japan and bence was introduced to other countries, in precise origin is not generally known. From its design and the date of its fist appearance, it is evidently an adaptation of the Engilah hausom.cab, bat who devlied the adaptation? The Japan Times reproduces a story from the Kogyo Sedan (Industrial Magatiae) which purports to give a tras version of the origin of the vehicle, though the Teklo Journal does not vouch for its accuracy:About | the 3rd year of Meiji (18yo AD) there lived a cartwright named Kosuke Takayama at Minami Nabucho, Kyobasbl, Tokto. He was dilly employed โช making wheels of various kinds. One day the idea ecosired to him that it would be very convenient to have a light carliga for carrying a passenger Instand friends Being told that it would be a very fies of goods, and he asked the opinions of his thing, he determined to make one and at last succeeded. But the vehicle which he made was of cosesa not of such a fine skapa as it is now. The axle-iroe and wheels were of wood, and the seat was sometblog like an ordinary chair fixed on the body of the cast, which must have made very ladterous to leak at. To see what sori of reception it would meet with from the pubile, he took three of the newly fashioned carts to the spacious ground at the end of the Nihonbash (ridge), atd, haisung flags and pennons, did all ho could to attract the attention of passengers to his new carts, Every one laughed at these curious objects, but never ventured a trip on them, and he was greatly disappointed. Now, his wife was of very pallent and sangatne disposition, and volunteered to make a trial trip in public by way of advertisement. Kosuke approved the idea, and, constituting himself the pioneer of the whole race of Harkistamen, he drew the cart song all the thronged streets of Tokio, with his wife as a passenger. This attracted the attention of the public, who impelled by corto alty, began to inke sides on those new cuts, and finally thels convenience made them fashionable and popular among the people of the city.

Our effective forces of Cavalry have been in creased, that the number of gens is about sixty times greater than the number effective in 1837, and that the Infantry of the Line, with the Army Reserve, is rather more than three times as numerous as it was at the beginning of the Queen's reigo.

.. THE PEERS AND THE ARMY. In this new arilcle he deals mose, with the social changes that have been wrought in the Army than with the increann of the strength of regiments of of battalions :—

As the Army in 1837 was at much less than half les present establishment, the small number of commissions available were generally ob nized by a higher class socially than at pretest. Festiler, Rifle and light Infantry battallops did not serve in the Tropics and through them, therefore, the illled aristocracy entered the Ser. vice. In a Follier battalion early in the relga there were a peer, four sons of peers, and three baronets, and ten titled officers in another regiment.

Unfortunately, although the younger sons of peers were gallant enough as regimental officers, when they had to fake to the field they-" could neither feed or clothe an army, and six months after we lavaded the Crimes the 25,000 men landed aray Eupatoria on September 14, 1854 bad practically ceased to exist. That these painful results were attributable mainly to want of transport was brought to light in the subsequent inquiry as our disasters before

The Chinese revolutionary society is again actively at work in this city. Organisation his been perfected and there is no lack of money and influence. A large hall has been rooted by the safety and meetings are held almost nightly in it. There the discussion is all on the coming strike in China for liberty from the Manchu dynasty. Great speeches are made, enthusiasm is latense, and maney is freely poured into the revolutionary land.

This revolution started in Honolulu a few years ago, Dr. Sun Yat Seo, a Canton China. man, is the father of the movement. He came to Hawail when a boy and was educated in the Rev. F. W. In London, it will be remembered, he was abducted by the Chicers Minister and hide den away for nearly a week. It is said that officials at the legation had planned to behead him, and made public.
