CHIPANTY OR CHINAMPO,

The clay of Fyen yang is about thirty miles from the part at the head of the Beldang (Tstorg) river, and it is the snelent capital of the Kingdom It is one of the largest clites In Korea, sed from time immemorial its Inhabitants have been noted for thrift and enterprise. The cy, like many other towns in the west, suffered great damare, during the China-Japan war la 1894 It was the place where the main Chinese army met, duastron defeat at the hands of the Japanese warriors, »fter which baule the Chinese troops soon left Kores for good. The con. sequence of the battle wan almost a total destruc- tion of the city by the Japanese artillery, and thousands of the fohabitants left the city for maler places in the Interior.

Doring the last two years the people have gradually returned to their old homes in the elty, bullding new houses and openlog various shops, so that the city is rapidly assuming its old as, ect and conditon "The latest news inform us that a great deal of commerce ti goleg on there both in exports and imports. We believe that the foreign popolation in Preng yang is already greater than that of any other city in the country except the three open ports and the capital. The resources of the western provinces, besides mineral products, are wheat, being, sohacen, "silk, and furs. The adjoining province (Whangbald produces great quan- itles of Ash and good deal of rice.

The new port is only about 180 miles from the capital and is about the same distance from Wijs, which used to be a great market for Koreans to certy on trade with Chinese on the nther side of Vilu slver, the boundary between China and Korea. Weere told that the harbour of Chinamro is very fine and that the depth of water is sufficient for ships of any size la anchor aktely.

One other favourable point, probably the most importin, must not be forgotten fa con. section with the new port, and it "Characteristics of the inhabitants of Pyengan province, It is freely admitied by the people of other provinces that the Pyenganites are the best cz'ns in Korra First of all they are Thirty and reliable. They possess more Inde pendent and manly sprit than the people of other provinces. Any native tradesman would gladly fur-lab supplies to the merchants of Prengan on credit, for he knows that they are absolutely trustworthy. This quality is the people will be a great factor in establishing successful trade relations with foreigners. We believe that before mary years this new port will get ahead of the older ports in volume of its trade..

I asked him where the nolte came from and he said from Mr Haygale's cabto, I then knocked at the door and asked if anything was wrong, but got no reply. I called a quarter- master to bring a fanter, and I pulled the curtain on one side and saw something burning on the deceased's breast. He was lying on his back in bed. The quartermaster put out the fire and I then notced blood on deceased's slit. I went an deck and ordered a boat away for the medical officer and for all the officers of the ship. I heard deceased groan once, but he did not move. The doctor came on board in less than half an hour, I put the sergeant of marines on guard at the cable door. Just before the doctor came I asked the sergeant if deceased were all!! alive and he replied that he thought he was. I spoke to deceased abortly after 9 o'clock, and did not notice anything out of the common la bis behaviour. Dating the evening he was playing the plan and singing.

By the Jary-I did not examina the body my. self; I spoke to him several times but could get no reply. The sergeant of marines picked a revolver up on the bed. It was deceased's own properly and was not a service zevolver. There was no light in deceased's cabio."

Robert A. Coleman, a leading signalman belonging to H.M.S. Algerine, said I hang my hammock up outside the deceased's cabin at 9.15 p.m. on the 19th fast. Lieut. Heygate had not then retired to his room. I turned in at about 925 and I heard Mr. Heygate tell the quartermaster to call him about a quarter of an hour before ihe èvolalfors in the morning and added. The attack took place 11 near as I can make out on the morning of Friday, the 9th, at about 4 o'clock. Very few details are known, s ro far only a letter from a native clerk has come to hand. The police force at the station consists of only abool a dozen men, and these were first attacked, the Corporal in charge was klifed and the rest tock to flight. Two prisoners were also in some in Charge, Mr. Crabronner, and him they have war killed. The Rebels then secured the Officer led away captive, probably as a means of making Treasury; what this was worth is unknown here terms in the future. They then sacked the at present, but it may have been anything between $4.000 and $23 0:0.

The town, which consisted entirely of wooden

and kajang houses, was then fired and every bulding destroyed. Gara is the export and Import centre of a considerable district, and the population was largely Chinese. These I have no doubt made themselves scarce as soon
