We have received from Messrs. Cottam & Co, the agents, a sample of most excellent beer, made by the Shanghai Brewery Co., under the superintendence of an experienced Bertaa brewer. It is placed on the market at $1.50 per dozen plots and being a light and foll flavoured beer is well suited for the hot season. It is a beer that should "tske" well here and find favour with all classes.

HEALTH OF THE ARMY IN
INDIA.
Writing to the Army, and Navy Garitie of April 3rd on the above subject, MrzĘ. C. F. James, late of 87th Royal Irish Fusiliers, ways: March 29th says that the Contagious Diseases
Mr. J. H. Lynn in the St. James Gazette of Acts increased disease in the Army, and the course of disease in the continental armies as compared with the British show the same resoft, and that the report of Lord Onslow's Perhaps Mr. Lynn and the "members of the committee amply demonstrates the above,
society for the disemination of loathsome diseases will kindly explain why there is the apalling contrast to the following returns, taken from the report of Lord Onslow's com mi tee, between the admissions of the German, Russian, and French armier, where regula tions for preventing these diseases are in force, and the Erish Army, where they are not le force. The ratio of admission per 1,000 strength for all forms of venerasi, disease (mean for three years endlag 1892) was: Germany, 27'3: Russla, 43; France, 43'3; Great Britain, home, 237 India, 438) and in 1875 the British troops in India had the enormous Increase of 322 admissions per 1,000. Lid Onslow in the Times of March 27th explains that the number of men admitted in 1895 was rather more than three-fourths of the number of casas, La., admis- slons, as some men are admitted more than once in the year. I, therefore, the tallo of admissions to hospital in 1892 be gas per reco, the total number of men admitted would be about 391 (per 1,000, or 37,823 of the whole Army in Indís.

Measta. Wheelock & Co, in their Freight Markit Report dated Shanghai 7th May wille
The term of the steamer "conference" as regards New York has now expired, and it would seem that there is no intention of renewing it, at least on the part of three of the principal Com. panies who have hitherto bsen parties to it. Frejr There three Companies have instituted a syadi. Natal.. cate amongst themselves, and arranged
Yangtze fortnightly service. As regards the remaining Petyang.... Companies, we cannot at present express their Kwill.......... Intentions, but shippers can safely reckon on a Mitke Morsvararon regular supply of tonnage.
Glulamm......... Constutis,—Our advices from Newchwang | Shantung immersa point to an eager demand from Japan for beats now swaliing shipment, which appear to be in a somewhat damaged condition from wat, and enquiries for ready tonnage at 38 cents. for Yokohams have so far not resulted in obtaining suitable craft, Frans Japan coal ports rates to this are slightly easier, and tonnage is obtaisable at our quotation.
