-THE STOWAWAYS NUISANCE. It is highly satisfactory to find that "an Ordinance to provide for the punishment of stowaways arriving in the Colony," has been introduced in Council and we can only hope that all necessary amendments will be made promptly and that it will be passed at a comparatively early date. It would be premature to criticise the measure until it is brought up for second reading, and we therefore` hold. over further comment on the subject for a few days. It enacts that any person arriving in this colony as stowaway shall, upon summary conviction, be liable to. a fine not exceeding one hundred dollars or to Imprisonment with or without hard labour for a period not exceeding one month. Also that the detention of a stowaway shall not be deemed illegal, if for no longer period than is reasonably necessary for the pur- pose of handing such person over to the Police, and the Police may apprehend without a warrant. such stowaway The River Steamers Ordinance (No. 18 of 1395) and Ordinance 22 of 1890 have; as remedies in cases coming within their the Daily Press states, provided efficacious

POLLARD'S LILLIPUTIANS.

The announcement that «Pollard's Lilliputian Opera Company was to appear in "La Marcotta drew a very large attendance at the Theatre Royal last night and, judging by the applause accorded the young setisis, they achieved a most decided success. "La Mascotte" is a bright and lively opera well suited to the capabilities of the Lilliputians, and every detail in acting, music, staging and dressing was attended to in a manner that was simply excellent. Indeed special mention must be made of the costumes, particularly those of the military chorus, which MAJOR W. E. C. ELLIS, 3rd Battalion Prince of la of Bettina ("La Mascotte enabled Wis were a very long way above the average.
