THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1897.

THE KOWLOON LAND AND BUILD-"] plague spreads to Celcutta and Madens half the loons in Blackburn would-be stopped or run on short time.

January aged.

The eighth ordinary annual meeting of share höjders in the ahore company was held at the offices, Victoria Balldings, at noon to-day, Mr. Follarion Henderson presided and there were also present Messrs. E. Gearg, J. Goosman, J. H. Cox. P. Jarden, H. J. Holmes, and M. Stafford Northcote (acting secretary),

The report, which was taken as read, was follows:

The Directors now submit to you a sintement of the affairs of the Company and balance sheet for the year ending 31st December, 1896. The balance of profit and lois account for the year, alter wrilog off all charges and expenses. amounted to $5.234.12. The Directors, there fore, recommend that a dividend of Eo cents per share be paid, which, after writing off the Direc tors' and Audkers' fees, will leave a balance of $246.11 to be carried forward to a new proft sand loss account,"

the

The Chairman. In moving the adoptios of the report, wald that it differed, lule from thất of last year. The amount from rools WẠI alightly larger than before, but the receipts from interest were less owing to having to provide funds for buildings. The profit-and-fous accounts were almost identical with inst❘ year's, Knutsford Terrace was fully occupied during the year and the new halldings near Lycemoon Pass were almost completed and would be ready for occupation by contract time. Affairs seemed to bs progressive on other side of the water, with better roads and improved ferry service, for which new. boats were shortly to be provided, and he had no doubt as to Kowloon maintaining its popt- Intity. There would be no difficulty in retaining that popularity, as one of the three new houses was taken and enquiries were being made for the other two. He would be glad to answer any questions regarding the report and balance sheet, Mr. Holmes said he wished to refer to the Iter "Accounts receivable. Perhaps, he vald, It would be well for the pubile to know what the accounts were and if the assets were good onei. The Chairman rald the sum of $793-as repro- zealed outstanding rents, which-had since-bcea received.

Mr. HolmesThat is most sailsfactory. He then seconded the Chairman's motion for the adoption of the report and it was unanimously carried.

Messrs. F. Henderson and J. Goosman were re-elected Directors and Messrs. Thos, Arnold and W. H. Gaskell auditors, the motions belog proposed by Messrs Georg and Holmes and Jordin spectively.

The dividend warrants will be ready to-

THE FOREIGN BANKS & JAPANESE HOLIDAYS.

YOKOHAMA, January 19th. We read in the Hocht Shimbun that the Hongkong and Shangbai Bank, the Chartered, and the other foreign banks In Yokohama, baving considered the propriety of observing the principal national boildays of Japan, have commanieated with their Roads of

rectors in Great Britain, and have oblilned the latter's approval. Hithin the custom bas been to take no notice of any Japanese festival except the Emperor's Birthday, on the 3rd of November, though the thdays of Occidental patentates have been duly observed. The Idea now, fr, if the Hocht be rightly Informed, to observe the great national festivals of Japan and neglect those of the West. A census of the world, says the London Hall, seems impossible, but it is going to be under- taken. This unparalleled labour is to be one of the gigantle prejsets to celebrate the advent of the twentieth century, and it is safe to say that "a more stupendour undertaking angauer

before been devised.

The scheme bad its resi inception at the bler nial meeting of the International Statistical Institute, recently held at Berne, Switzerland. At the instance of Dr. Guillaume, the director of the statistical office of the Federal Government, a commitee of distinguished statisticians, scientists, travellers and geographers was ap- polated to begin work by collecting all informa ifon possible as to the best methods of taking this world centus, and to report to the state at its meeting next year,

The first step in this important committee's Jabour was to enlist the interest and ald of Li Hung Chang. They met ble when he was in 2.lin and secured the promise of his influence in China. In no nation will the work of census. taking be more difficult than in China.

Anything approximating an accurate census of the population of the earth at the present time is, without doubt, an impossibility. In additon to the poles, there are many spots on the earth
