THE U.S. SECRETARY OF

In connection with the sanouncement that Senator Sherman has bean appolated Secretary of State by Mr. McKinley, the following tesgram to the Frisco Carondela, dated Washington, Dec. 18th. Is of Interests sam
Senator John Sherman will be Secretary of State under HcKinley, and Hanna will be his successor to the Senate. This sistemmat was made to-day in the most positive terms by a Republican Senator, who usually knows what he is talking about. The Senator holds the most friendly relations with Sherman, and this fact- gives more than ordinary weight to his prediction,
' According to this gentleman, McKinity has never swerved from his original" determination, which was to offer the Sealaryship of State to bla old pollical patron, the Senator from Ohio, The general understanding was, that Skirman was onwilling to accept the post, on recount of bis advanced years and Infirmities, and when Hanna went to Washington he gave his fiands to understand that all talk of Sherman going Into the Cabinet had been dropped. Now the story is received on the authority quoted, and finds much credence,
"According to the Sensior mentioned, Sher- man not only is not reluctant to become Secre tary of Stale, but actually desires the post. That he was offered it and had written his acceptance is believed by many of his colleagues. The Senator himself declines to discuss the repost in any way.
"Accompanying the rumem is the repait to the effect that Hanns and Foraker have coms to an agreement concerning the future of men and agnation of Sherman for the purpose of politics in Oklo, and immediately after the
entering McKinley's Cabinet, Governor Bushnell will appoin! Havna Senator from Oklo," BE CAREFUL WITH THAT LAMP I
I GEELY hope that Mrs. Mimer has abandoned the custom of keeping an oil lamp burning la her room of nights. She does not say what the city was, but I trust it no longer axlats. If possible to sold it, no light should bars in a room wherein people are alsoping. The reams ought to be plain nough, yet we all need lessor in common salon.
