Is it possible that we are threatened with an. ather Tichborne cr? It looks like it; for we abserve that the Rev. Mr. Williams, who is somewhat vaguely described as "of Devanshire," and as "an old irlend of the. Dowager Lady Tichborne," has applied for the surrender of Willam Cresswell, now an innate of the Par. ramalia Lanatic Asylum. This William Creas well is alleged to be the real Sir Roger.
An Important change in the Geiman'mailservice 3 to the Far East is to take place ere long. The ...Gennan Federal Council on the 5th Inst, adopted a measure providing for a farther sobsidy from the Imperial Government to the Norddeutscher Lloyd Steamship Company of 1,500,000 marks
FIRST DAY,THURSDAY, 19th December, 1896. The anno regatta epened to-day under very lavourable purple. The weather early In the day looked glossny, but towards noon t brightened up, and the conditions wenn well. sulled for aquatic sport. A pleasant breeze from the east made the calling race spirited and In these events, as well as the rowing races, the keenest interest was evinced among the many speciaters, the crews having many ardent partizans among the ladies. The German mail iner Hokansollern made a capital flagship and Captain Hawassowitz had her in spic and span order below and aloft. The programme, which wa pab'ished last evening, contained many entries and the officials all worked indefatigably to make the gathering a qurcess and to ensure the comfort of visitors. The Hongkong Regi- | R. F. Lammert (sit.)...............................................Tant ylb ment's fine band played on board the flagship and largely enhanced the day's pleasure. Visitors were conveyed on board by the Dock Company' launch Fams.

This race was, for some unknown reason, ball an hour late in starting, and when the boats did get away Kilack's crew had the advantage. At about 300 yards from the post Lammert shook his men up and by the time the coal sheds were reached he had a fine lead, the next boat being Shamrock, wuh Thistle in close attendance Ross at this early stage showed poor form and splashed a good deal, Zhistle and Shamroch had a perfect dingdong fight for second place, and just before the flagship was passed Thfilli took second place. Mr. W/S. Gilbert bas made some progress with a new work for the stage. In it he reverts to his earlier manner, owing nothing to collabora tlon, musical or otherwise. The opening scone of the comedy will be inld on the deck of a P. and O. steamer. Being one of the guests on the recent trial trip of the India, Mr. Gilbert selzed, the opportunity to take a series of photographs useful for the scenery of his new plece.
The Manchester Ship Canal seems to be expanding the trade of the diy. During the first thirty-nine weeks of the present year the total turnover has been £143,003,000, as compared "with"£127,400,000 during the same period of last year. While the bankers' clearances at Liver. pool have Increased by 1a per cent., those of Manchester have increased by 17 per cent, It is suld, too, that whereas the valds of the Imports and exports of Manchester by the canal doring last year was £12,000,000, the total this year will be £16,000,000 if the present rate of lacreste be maintained.
A valuable addition has now been made to the Navy by the completion, at Chatham, of the first-class battleship Victorious. The vessel, which has a displacement of 14,900 tons, is fitted with engines of 12,000 borse power under forced draught, which will prapel her at a speed of 17.5 knots, the speed ander natural draught being one knot less. She carries four 12-in. breech-loading guns, and twelve 6-in, and thirly smaller quick-firing gans. The total cost of the abip has been about £870,000, excluding the armament and ordnance stores.

RE THE JARLSBERG'S SHAFT.
AUDI ALTERAM PAKTES.
It'sopears that the article hended " A Remark- able Achterement, which we pablished in our Inst issue and credited to the Tapan Gazelit. was slightly inaccurate, for " An Old Engineer* writes to the Yokohama Bor of Curiosto cOLTECİ what he abowa ara misleading statements. He starts by stating that he is a marine engineer by prefassion and that whoever wrote the Gazalie article knew very little about soch matters. He give three' reasons for his assertions, sa follows:-
to-Shaft are viade of #taught from, and not "cast,” as the expert (?) individual who reported for the Gazelis seems to think, Scraps of leon are placed in strips, and after being forged are welded together by the use of a heavy steam hammer, and while at times all the pieces are not wholly welded-for It is imporsible to know whether they are or not--fit they have, under ordinary circumstances, the required strength. The "ranty scrap Iron" discovery was probably crated by the break being open for a month, and water getting in rusted any space which was not welded together.
10-A thrust shalt five feet long may have bern ballt for the Jarlsberg, but I never saw one. That a plain shaft xa inches in diameter and 5 feet long should weigh 31 tons is all rot, for it will weigh but 1,885 lbs., or 337 lbs. per foot of length. With five or six collers on the shaft all would weigh one ton, sot zi tops, atsted.
30.-Another evidence of ignorance showa, when the reporter states that the fire solid collars are separate pieces; for they are part and parcel of the shaft, and do not secure it.

In conclusion *Old Engineer says For one so unqualified to state the real facts It becomes farcical to condems a firm like any Hartlepool engine builder, and if I am not very much mistaken the exen12 (?) author will be called to account for hG libellous remarks—and he should be. My résson for taking up your valuable spico ta that all engineers who have read his article are thoroughly disgusted that such downright rot is published as facts, and the author had better conûne himself ton Iins of business he is fambiar | with, and not assume a knowledge of something he knows nothing about.
(It is only fair to the Gazsite to add that the reporter responsible for the statements that have so highly incensed “An Old Englater" doubilese, had Utile resson to question the truth of the las formation received." The reporter could not havE been a marine enginees. At least, It is not likely.)
