SHANGHAI, July 17th. : A native comespondent sends the following report, with reference to a farewell banquet given by his Excellency Liu Kan-yi on the 6th instant to the Captats and First-Lieutenants of the two German men-of-war which were stationed at Nanking after the attack on Mr. Krause on the drill-ground, near the vicerega yameo, some weeks #go. The German officers, tour in number, were escorted by some forly allors and marines from their own ships, while the road from the jetty to the yamea was lined for the most braves" with their multi-coloured party by banners. With a great crowd of the tobabitants allently gazlog on the foreign guests of the Viceroy as they went by, the scene reminded one of a festive procession. The guests were accom- modsted with carriages which brought them to the Fuad gates, where they were greeted with the usual salute of three guns and ibe playing of the military band of the Te Ching-chun brigade. This was the signal for all the middle gates of the nine court-yards of the yamea to open simultaneously, revealing to the gaze of thore in the first court-yard single ranks of soliters Unlng each court up to the ninth, where stood the Viceroy himself, accompanied only by Yo Total, Chief of the Nanking areas of Foreign Affairs, in the middle of the grand hall. awalding the approach of his guests as they passed through the middle gates

SHANGHAI OPINION.

Shanghai, July 17th.:

A most interesting document has been for warded to us (Chinä Gaxeita) by the Govern- ment printers of Hongkong, Messrs. Norehna and Sons, being "Papers on the subject of a petillan addressed to the House of Commons praying for an amendment of the constitution of the Crown Colony of Hongkong" That petftias, It will be remembered, was presented in England by Hongkong's chosen apostle of reform, the residents of the neighbouring colony of whom Hon. T. H. Whichead, and signed by 363

-Interesting to note 284 ara British, 10 Anglo-Chinese, 3 Americans, 4 Partuguese and 47 British Indians; the Germans, who are exceedingly numerous in the colony, did not sign it; the Spanish, who are also there in consider able numbers, did not sign; and the polyglot representatives of a score or more of other races, who have found a comfortable haven and refuge in the colony, did not sign the petition. The document therefore in the mala resolved itself foto British petition and was supported by merchants, bankers, professional men, traders, artisans and other ratepayers and inhabitants of the Isle of Fragrant Watera. Sir William Robinson, the Governor, is forwarding a copy at the petition to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, patated out that he thought he was justified in saying that the petition owed its origin principally to the Impostilon on the tax- payers of the colony, some three yours ago, of the addiifanal military contribution of £20,000 1 year, a most unfair inuendo, as the military contribution is only one of the many
