NORTH BORNEO COTTON.
AN INDUSTRY WITH MILLIONS IN IT. Attention was first drawn to the subject of the cultivation of cotton in British North Borneo by Sir Spencer St. John, then Caurul-General fox Borneo, in the early forties. It is long and milky in staple. The bushes live for four years without transplantation, wheress China and Indian cotton require replanting once a year. The native cotion of Borneo regalías very little | trouble and sixt to no expense to keep it in a flourishing condition and in fall bearing. The main drawback to the planting of Sea Island and other cottons on a large scale la that any rain, after the pod opers, spoils it, whereas Borneo cotton (Dusun cotton, as it is called) will remain some days on the busbas, with pòd open, with- out spolling, no matter how inclement the weather may be. It is valued in Liverpool at a penny per pound, which is higher than ordinary American cotton, and is fetches in Hongkong about $20 per pical. It would appear to be too long in the staple to suit the Chinese for hand-loom work, but it is chiefly owing to this very characteristic that it is esteemed in Japan for warp purposes; and orders for many thousands of bules monthly could be had for the asking i some enterprising firm ware to čultivate it in Borneo on a large scale It in mally planted. After the ground has been fairly cleared, at an expense of $10 or so per acre, men and women can be engaged to put the seeds in the rame way as they sow paddy, the men making holes in the ground with sharp sticks, and the women dropplag seed lato the apertures and then carefully covering them over with the soll. The plants should not be more than a foot or fourteen inches apart. A couple of weed- ings may subsequently be made to give the plants a fair start, after which there la little to be done but send women and children round to weed the fields and keep the plants in proper order, on the understanding that they will get so moch per pound for cotton delivered in due course in your godowns.
