SIAM'S RICE EXPORTS.
Never, in all her history, has the rice out-pat| of Slam even approached that of the present your, although it is gratifying to know that there is every prospect of the coming harvest proving fully as bountiful as the last, and, therefore, owing to the Increase in the area under cultivation of the experts in 1894 being higher again. In fans alone 3,100.000 piculs—or over 412 million pounds were exported from Bangkok, principally to Hongkong and Singapore. In June 1890-Slam's record year the figures were half-a-million plenis less, and last year they only reached #58,000 plcals. Dur- Ing the first six months of this year over five and a half million pleals were shipped, or nearly million and a half more than in 1890. Last month over 900007 picals were exported, or oret three times the amount of the previous July. And rice is still pouring in. When the figures are turned into money they might excite the cupidity of even more honest Individuals than M. Myre de Vilers. Twelve
PEKING NOTES.
Peking, September 18th. Colonel Denby, the dayes of the Diplomatic Body, has gone to Saanghal to meet Mrs. Dezby who returns to Peking to grace the Ualled States Legation, Col. Draby is likely to complete a third term of office here, to the great advantage of his country, to the gratification of the foreign residents, and, we hope, to his own advantage likewise. The U.S. Govenment must see the advantage of having an experienced pilot to guide the ship of state In Chinese councils. It is by virtue of Cel. Denby's lengthened stay that he has succeeded to the Inflaenilal and enviable post of doyen of the Diplomatic Corps.
The new offices in the. U. S. Legation are nearing completion. In this building we have one of the best foreign-erected boures in Peking. We hear it rumoured that the late Italian Minister is likely to return to his place here at no distint date. The work at the imperial and fethodist Colleges has been resumed after the summer holidays.
We are having delightful weather now! September and October are our two finest months. During the day it is still somewhat.

TIENTSIN NOTES.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
TIENTSIN, 18th September, 1893, A case of result of a very serious nature occurred at Taku about a week ago. The facts now appens to be about as follows. The Taku Tug and Lighter Co. had felt it to be necessary, for good reasons, to discharge a company of coolles. These fellows employed an acknow- ledged and well-known "bally" to assist them, and started for Pilot Town, bent on mischief The foreigners, who were on the outskirts of the village, sw them coming across the plain with rather boisterous demonstrations, but did not know who they were or what they were auer, As they approached, they decided to make a rush at them in sport, to see what they would do. All, to the number of 30 or 40, except the “bally."|| took to their heels,” He was armed with a sword and pistol, as it turned out, and came right on towards the foreigners, and rushing upon one of them. Capt. Lindberg, siruck at him with the sword. The latter parried the blow with his cane, which w11, broken to bits. A thrust was then made, which might have been seriour,' but fortunately did tule more than go past his side, and through his clothes. By some means the sword was dropped or knocked from the man's hand, and he drew his pistol, but Capt. Lindberg grabbed the sword and gave him a terrible how over the head, which made a long gash and laid bare a considerable portion of the skull. It must have been a glancing blow, as the bone was not broken, though the man was completely stunned. Another coolle rushed up from behind to seize the Captain's arm and prevent a second blow, when a swoop backward of bis powerful arm laid him low and almost finished him we well. There was nothing personal in this affair ;, it was an attack on the Company. The parties Hought 'were the' Manager and his Chiness assistant, In
order to compel the re-employment of the offend- ing batch of coaltes, fed on by a bad fellow known "Cack Eye," who has had too much
of bly own way for years pist, The simple ques- tion is whether the Company shall macage its own ffales, or the coolles. The "bully * Is In the hands of the subarities here, and as the mutter being taken up vigorously by the British Consul for the Company, he will probably receive bis deserts, and the rights and authority of the Company be vindicated.
The water on the plain is falling rapidly-more so, we think, than on former occasions of Beod- ing. A visit was made to some of the villages about 45 22 distant recently by one of the missionaries. He found that while there will be considerable suffering among the very poor, yet it is not likely to be quite as great aeli was three years ago. Still there will be need of anistance being given to some of the most destitute in many of the villages
zes surrounding Tientsin, and with the abundant resources known to be at the disposal of the Chinese authorities, it is to be hoped that they will make such provision as will prevent suffering and starvation. Ar yet we have heard of no move on their part In this direction.
Various large portions of the city walls are down and wil ncccultate a beary outlay in restoring them. The floods overtopped the bridges, and acveral arches of the parapet of the celebrated Lu Kwo bridge, about ten miles to the south-west of the captial and spanning the Hwen, or muddy river, and ornamented with so many lions, large and small, and said to be incalculable, bave been washed away. The parapet of the Beggars" bridge, imimedtalely out- side the front gate, was under water, si the same people have began to repair and restore time, a thing never-beretofore known. The their broken-down walls and houses, At this season, and after such destruction of property, the price of lime has risen to three times its usual valve. The season hau certainly been peculiar. The inhabitants have suffered from s combination of heat, water and dampness. The children's heads are covered with crops of boils and the people's legs are swollen and covered with wores. The Chinese talk of the poison of water, and have a great dread of its application in
any form. After what one bas seen, one is inclined almost to believe that there must be something in the Chinese idea.—N. C. Dally News Cor.

Fortunately so one was hurt, and no damage done near the water line and at last accounts all were doing well. ` It was one of those providential deliverances which
