A young farmer possessing 40 acres of land was in want of money to purchase some manure that he and another man bad already agreed for. The husband went to his wife and asked her to let him bave some of her best clothing to pawn for the required sum. The wife advised him ant to be in such a burry, but to wait till he got in the first crop of rice, and then he could purchase the manure. But he had already bargained and settled for it, and was obliged go to the city the next day to bring it to the farm. So at early dawn next morning the young wife gave him her precious garments with a trembling hand, and the man made off to his boat, and the wife hut her door and went to bed again.
