Its work has enlarged in there later years very rapidly, especially through is medical department, which has been under efficient management all the Ume. For more thar two years, in the abrence of a clerical missionary, the entire work has been under the care and direction of the physician, Dr. Merriit. It is understood that he is to have a much needed clerical colleague in the autumn, For the last for months bla clinics have been growing in the attendance till the numbers now present daily often exceed roo, and frequently Important surgical cases are presented.

The C. I. M. capblished a receiving and forwarding agency here last summer. This was done at none too early a date, as members of that mission are very frequent travellers over this "'road to and from Shanal. In view of the large number of single ladies continually passing this way, it le very important that a family be placed in charge here at the earllest possible date. This cannot be emphasised too strongly. The Chinese take note of much things.

Several light showers of rain have fallen this spring, not in time to do the wheat much good, but so as to encourage the planting of other cereals, There has been a great deal of high wind and clouds of dense dust all over the plain: Everything appears to be quiet and the people bually engaged in their various callinge.-N. Nothing fresh from the camphor districts, and nothing particularly stirring from the sulphur mines; the coal mining is jogging along in a slovenly, slatternly way, unknown in olden times when it was under foreign management. Shanghal Mercury,

(From Shanghal Mercury Correspondent.)

A pirate was being conveyed the other day from Tal-chow-to to Kangchow in one of those borrid exces in which sech criminals are confined: six constables were in charge of him, who seemed to be opium-smokers. Having been deprived of this comfort for some distance, they took an extra whiff or two whilst crossing a wide inland lake not far from this city, sed all fell into a sound sleep. The prisoner, seeing his chance, gradually worked his way out of his chains and dived into the lake, the dark night favouring his excipe. The six runners were greatly alarmed as they could find no trace of their charge. One run away, but the other five were seized and conveyed to the San-ing Halen, Tang Lau-ylee, who has had them sent on to the provincial prians to explate their crime. The Chinese law is

"life for life."

Outside the Pilen-meng of this city, an uncle and his nephew whilst partaking together an ordinary meal, got, to wrangling about some trifling thing. The nephew was outrageous and became mad with excitement and snatching up a meat chopper knocked his uncle down and cut off his head: The neighbours, becoming alarmed, fearing, they might be involved, had the young man dragged to the Lan-ing- helen. The latter cansalied with these elders. The law is beheading for such crime, but there is a custom, which has almost become law namely, "burying alive," So it was eventually decided to nail the young colorit up in a strong. coffin and bury him alive, which they accor- dingly did, to the satisfaction of all concerned.

Visitors to Chinanfu, whether, native, or foreign, maally go to see a fer-famed spring in the S. W. suburb. In an enclosure, surrounded gushing forth from the earth in sparkling beauty a splendid stream of sweet, clear water, After

supplying the needs of the neighborhood, according to Chinese ideas of need, this stream paris loto two heads, and, reinforced by the waters of numerous other springs, toms of which are magnificent ones also, encircles the entire city, making the city moat as a chaonel.

'At the northem side of the city the waters from the various sprines come together and form a'lake. This lake is divided by the city, wall, and what would have been a north gate to the city is transformed into a water gate, through which the two sections of the lake as con- sected.
