THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1892.
It will be within the recollection of some of our readers, perhaps, that the following appeared En our issue of the 36th December :—
A MAIL STEAMER DISABLED.
"News has been received here to-day "by telegraph of the breakdown of the Italian mail steamer Bormids. She was picked up by the Indo-China Company's stenwer Wingsang and towed into Saigon, where she will be decked for repairs. It is stated that the Rormita's machinery has come to grief, owing to the crank shaft 1
The Pingsang is now in route to
that the Bormida was picked up by the Wingsang near Cape St. James, whence the | first news was wired to Saigon. The amount of the salvage claim cannot, of course, be ascertained until the Wingrang arrives with full particulars of the accident."
On the 3rd January the Wingrang arrived here and reported as follows: On the 26th at noan In lat. 8° 28. north and long, roy° 49'cast; at 1.30 p.m, observed the seamship Bormide | dying signals of distress, her engines having broken down. On the 37th took her in tow for Cape St. James Wind and sea moderating arrived at Cape St. James at 2.10 p.m. on the 28th. Slipped the steamship Bermida and proceeded to Saigon."
We now team that the amount of salvage claimed by the princely boute" is 4.500 (17. $77,000 approximately) and it is alleged that the Captain of the Bermida not only agreed to pay 44,500, by flag signals, prior to being taken in tow by the Wingrang-which at first demanded £5.000-but signed a document spon arrival at Saigon, But that fo mere effe that is merely the purport of rumours current in shipping circles. The Wingsang will now be docked for her annual clean up and await the arrival of the Bormida which is, we hear, likely to be arrested 1000 as she gets late British waters owing to her

The isloon passengers on board the Wingsang from Calcutta at the time of the rescue were Dr, and Mrs. Cantile, Captain and Mrs. Grear, Captain Faithfüll, and there were also 431, Chinese, on board. Of thess we hear that Dr. Cantlle will probably be called spon to give evidence ** he rendered valuable assistance to the Wingsang when the officers of the ship were working like" niggers to anve the fallan-liner, her passengers and crew → an operation performed at considerable risk to those who took an active part in it, owing to the very beavy sea that was running at the time. In salvage cases a great many things have to be taken into consideration by the Conit, such as the value of the vessel aired and her cargo, the peril in which she was, the value of the rescuing vessel and cargo, the amount of labour neze formed and the risk run in saving the disabled ship. The sivage allowed is usually divided between the owners of the ship, the officers and crew-every one down to the cook getting a hare according to the wages he is paid, though that seems hurdly fair. Those who run the most risk and have most work should be con- sidered before those who take no active part in the bariness. It is manifestly unfair to share the 'apoli with a cook, or a stewardess elther for that matter: c'ca though she be as sweet as "the last rose of summer," or a bewitching sa

As regards the residence in Bolas of 'Jones,' both before and after the marriage, much has been written, and here we get into the realm of fiction. It seems to be agreed, however, that his long and mysterious absences, his commard of rooney and the general suspicious circumstances under which be lived, made his neighbours look upon him as a highwayman. His wife would, of course, be quite noable to account for these disappearances. She, poor thing, would be the last to know their cause. WAS IT À BIGAMOUS MARRIAGE? The date of the mariage is starding, for at that time (13th of April, 1790) Henry Cecil was already a married mas, and his wife was living. The pileate Act of Parliament dissolving hir Erst marriage and enabling him to marry spało only received the royal arment in June, 1791. The peerages agree in this, and they also agree in giving the date of the second marriage as October 3rd. 1791. This would fit in very nicely! but, unfortunately, that date is not, the date of the marriage at Biolas. The following are the material dates and facts connected with the first marriage, taken from Act. 31, Geo. III. cap. 68 (private and personal). On the 23rd of May, 1776 Heary Cecil married Miss Emma Verto,
lady of considerable fortase, the annual rental Neon of her property being £1,974 75. od. In this her husband was given a life interest after the death of his wife. He also himself settled considerable property to the uses of the bride on marriage, gave her an allowance of £1,000
