The evening's entertaloment was brought to a conclusion with the Doxology and Benediction. Among others who came down to take part in the proceedings were Mrs. and Miss Digby Barker, Mrs. Ackroyd, Hon. Commander Hastings and Mrs. Hastings, Major and Mrs. Self, Mrs. Burdon and Mrs. Granville Sharp.

SWINDLING DIRECTORS.

Referring to the recent conviction and sentence of two directors of a public company in Sydney for fraudulent appropriation of the company's. funds by overdrawing their accounts en bogus: securities, etc, the Australian Stor makes the following editorial cominents, which might be studied with great advantage by Hongkong directors and shareholders :—”.

It must occur to every thoughtful person that the state of the law in regard to public companies I largely responsible for the facility with which these frands were perpetrated. The society was formed in March, 1888, and had therefore been in existence for over three years. During this time there should have been at least three thorough audits made of the accounts, whereas there have been nong worthy of the namo Doubtless (he auditors employed made some sort of examination of what was placed before thecis but it is only too apparent that false balance sheets were supported by fictitious vouchers, which were too readily accepted. Eliberthis, or a condemnatory report must have been made by the auditors and suppressed, because the swind ling went on wholly unchecked until by som fortuitous occurrence the affair was exploded, But for, this accident the concern would bavd been kept going until it resulted in wide spread ruin.. Had the law provided for an independent occurred at all, would have been speedily brought to a head.
