NORTH.
-WHAT MUST BE DONE.
Speaking of rumours, I learned only yesterday of one from Central China. The story is as follows:-A boy after attending a school of the missionaries one day went home crying, saying: bis comrades had told him the foreigners bad. drawn lots to tako out the eyes of one of the scholars, and that the lot had fallen on him. The parents ridiculed the matter, and sent theby Hunan soldiers and officials who set Imperial- boy back to school. When evening came ne boy came home, and on Inquiring at the school" it was sold the boy had not come that day. Farther search was made, but with no success. Whereupon the rumour was spread abroad that the foreigner had taken out the eyes of the boy, and barled or bid him, with no sign of his | whereabouts. The next step was a slot and the destruction of the property. The official had written these facts—or rather this conspiracy- to his home, and one who had been here with foreigners was asked if he knew whether suck things often occurred.-N. C. Daily News.

Extraordinary as it may seem, it is from the New York Sun that we gather the following particulars of a banquet that was even by the United States Contul at Amoy, on the fourth of July last. Our reasons for reproducing them are twofold: the first being a desire to make known to the educated world that even such papers as the Sus are coming round to our way of thinking by publishing the following speech, which in the light of subsequent events can be regarded but little short of prophetic. For some time past we have had ample evidence of the exceptional scholastic attainments of Mr. Tein Chin Chung, bat the attached, which is but a condensed report of his expressed opinions of the relations now existing between China and the outer "barbarians" speaks for itself.
