Mr. Russell came out to China as far back as 1819, when he opened business in Canton under the style of Samuel Russell & Co, working in co-operation with Messn. E Carrington & Co., Cyrus Baller, and B. and T. C. Hoppin. For five years the firm continued its operations with varying success, and on 1st January, 1842, its business was wound up, and the house of Russell & Co. was organized in its stead, Mr. Philip Ammidon, who had been in Chino for some years as agent for Mestra. Brown & Ives, becoming a partner la the new firm with Mr. Samuel Russell, and an advertisement was published in the New York Evening Post of May 28th, 1874, notllying the public of the formation of the new firm, and giving references to over a dosen American houses whose names were prominent in con- nection with the Chias trade at that time. Amongst those lastrumental in starting the firm we find another once famous, but now almost forgotten name that of Mr. John Perkins Cushing (formerly of Perkins & Co., Canton and Boston), who finding himself hampered by more business. than he could manage conveniently, transferred part of it,

NEW YORK, May 23rd. General Collett telegraphs yesterday that Lieut. Clay's detachment with Capt. Deen and Lieut. Chasad are on the track of the Senapati near Thobal; traces were temporarily lost. The Senapati is now certainly in the Manipur valley, but has many friends, and is clever at disguising. General Collett telegraphed last night that Major Maxwell's men had just brought in the Senapati, who is now a prisoner under a military guard. All the important men are now prisoners. This result is entirely due to the admirable judgment, sagacity and energy with which Major Maxwell has managed the business.

LONDON, May 8th.

Two women have been arrested la connection with the explosion of a bomb in the building occupied by the Ministry of the Interior at Lisbon,

Mr. Howard Vincent, M.P. read a paper before the Royal Colonial, Institute lo-day, in which he advocated the formation of a Commerce Union of the Empire.

The alarm caused by the Influenza epidemic was manifested in the House of Commons to- day, when a discussion took place with reference to the presence of microbes of the disease in the House. CALCUTTA, May 25th. The Senapati has been captured after hiding for more than a month in the hills. He came into Manipur disguised as a Naga coolle and was traced to a village half a mile from the palace, where he was arrested and brought in by Kalunder Slogh, a frontier police sabadar. No practical resistance was made,, and po attempt at rescue, and very little interest was shown by the people, although it was just the time when crowds of Maniparis were returning home from the basaars. The arrangements for the capture had been very cleverly made and reflect great credit on Major Maxwell and the officers of the Political Department, The Senapati is now kept in the guard-room of the 43rd Gurkhas.

General Collett wires yesterday that the Senapati was captured after a severe struggle by Subadar Kalendra Singh, Surma Valley and sepoy Anu Singh, Gaza bills frontier Police battalion. Senapati detected them and ran, bat was caught by the Subadar; they rolled together on the ground till the sepoy arrived. After a further struggle the Senapati gave in.

For eighteen months or two years prior to the scandal Lord de Ros had been suspected of unfair practices.
