THERE IS 11,000,000 square miles of land in Africa, but only 3,000,000 remain under the Jurisdiction of native relers. The ether 9,000,000 are divided between France, England. Germany and other European countries. France has the largest territory, but England has the most valuable. This is a pretty sad state of affairs, crime when it is perpetrated by Christian nations me there there and by Christian natione by the aid of bayonets, rum, and the bible. Ix reference to the recent competition between the Rifle Associations of Hongkong, Singapore and Shangbal, the Frat Press suggests that a at scheme be drawn up for an annual rifle match between the three ports, and that a suitable trophy be provided by them for the colony, the trophy to be entrusted, as the case match, to be held for the year by the winning may be, to the President of the Shanghai Municipality, the Governor of Hongkong, or the Governor of the Straits Settlements. The ruggestion seems feasible enough. THE Pinang Gastle, commenting upon the trade troubles there, has no hesitation in saying that, far from being on the verge of hopeless traders of Penang are financially sound. There bankruptcy, most of the Chettles and Chinese are, it says, doubtless many who have lost money, are in a small minority, and very few are and some who have lost heavily; but the latter hopelessly involved. Such at least is the opinion of the bankers and European merchants. At the same time that journal admite that there are among the Chinese some who are in a hopeless state of Insolvency, one or two of whom may only avald bankruptcy owing to the forbearance
of the banks.

"A game full of wonderful kinks; They call it Tiddley Winks." But it's just too sweet-have you heard of it ? THE traffic of Liverpool is certainly enormous. In 1889, 44,00 vessels passed in and out of Liverpool Of these, 38,015 used the Queen' Channel, passing the Crosby Light-ship and Askew Splt, while 5,963 went through the Darrow Rock Channel. Thus the full average traffic in and out of the Mersey was 130 steam and sailing vessels a day. Anything which stands in the way of such trade, which renders the navigation dangerous or only a little difficult, which causes the loss of time, should be done away with. There are in Liverpool sixty lines of steamers trading "foreign"; sixty diferent house flags can be counted in the docks on any day of the year, which belong to the port, and these include at least 600 steamers, without saying anything of the coasting trade, or those boats which run to Ireland, In the same year, 1889, the customs returns for Liverpool were "laward," 6,586,381 tons of whipping and outward," 8,307,442. On the letter from the Colonial Secretary con cerning Mount Davis Cemetery Mr. Francia ked appended minute to the effect that the ex- pression dispose of the dead was much too wide, and might be read more freely than was intended..
The President sald' that, as certain bye-laws giving the Board powers in this question could not come into force for some time yet the matter would be better postponed. The Bill had been read a second time and would probably be paned at the next Council meeting.
The question was therefore held over. On the mortality returns for the three weeks ended June 6th, Dr. Cantlle noted that only one case of typhold was recorded. This was very than nu.. satisfactory. There had been fewer this year

Dr. Cantile moved that a letter be addressed to the Colonial Secretary recommending that the Government Analyst be instructed to furnish every month to the Board a report on the water supplied from Tytam and Pokialam Reservoirs. As this report was furnished to the Government already it would involve no forber trumble, and it was only right that the public should know.
After a little discussion, resulting in the inser tion of the words "quantity and quality of" the motion was seconded by Dr. Ayres and carried.
Dr. Canilia then moved further that the
Government Analyst be directed to make special report regarding the whitish appearance of the Altered water delivered from the Tytam

Dr. Ayres explained that the whitish appearance was caused by the cement in the alter-beda, which after a time would cease to have any such effect. But the water was perfectly healthy, and it was impossible to prevent it. He would, however, second the motion.
The motion was carried.
