Several Aundred people are there-efficials, servants, soldiers, and sedan chalt bearers. The officials are seated for the most part in camp chairs, chasing. They are richly dressed in brown satin and furs. The gurgle of the water pipe is for the pipes, cups of hot tes, hat boxes or bundles containing dress boots. Large lanterns made of silk gauze stretched over a ight bamboo frame, circular and two feet In diameter," are hanging from tripods placed about t
at the court. On the gauze is printed the name and rank of the owner in broad squat characters, As we stand looking on, there is a cry from the gate: "The Provincial Examiner arrives." At once pipes are, put down and the lower efficinis and expectants rise and form double ranks dingonally, across the court frora gate to verandah; behind them stand their servants elevating above their heads the lanterns, or rather the great luminaus globes of gauze, whose soft light falling on the red crowned hats of the officials, each with its glittering button, and on the brown satin of their tunics, and lighting up the double line of sober pallid faces thus thrown fato high relief from out the surrounding dark- neas, all goes to make up a striking picture.
Meanwhile the great man appears, walking deliberately between the ranks, with head alightly inclined in acknowledgement of the bonour paid him, and disappears into the second court, fallowed closely by a servant stepping lightly along bearing sweetmeals, teapot, and

In addition to this open count against him there is said to be another open secret that has great weight with the officials against him. They have learned that he made a good sum of money from the government a few years ago, by putting up an inferior wall around the Imperial audience. hall in the city, and they take this occasion to recover some of that loss.-M. His Ex. Yü-he, the Militare Governor of Shirgking, Manchuria, has confirmed, the per- mission for mining, that was applied for in November last, by a British firm and issued by the Board of Admiralty. Official notices have been issued. The mining district is stated to be known as Lung Hwa Hsien, near Ya-lu River, on the borders of Shingking and Korea. Shanghat by the Haean. This is another proof The documents granting the permission 'go to
that, when they mean business at Péking it does not take long for them to carry it through, even though Governor-Generals and Governors are not much la favour of the scheme, They have to do as they are requested. This is a step in the right direction if they really mean to develop the mineral resources of China. Li Hung-chang is not willing to use Foreigners in this scheme, but be will eventually have to do so.
Smaller officials were constantly arriving, not being specially announced. The crowd grew more an more dense, until, as dawn approached, we were waiting only for the Governor, the Judge, Treasurer, Salt Commis- sioners, Tactal and Chi-fu having successively arrived. At 6 20 a.m., about daybreak, the Governor appeared, and passed slowly along the ranks. He is a larve man, fully six feet in height, and corpulent. His face has a baughty but cewora expression-his mouth hangs partially open, his eyes are half closed, and his almost pendant checks shake with every step. He goes directly to his dressing room, where he puts on ather boots and changes his hat for one that is worn in the presence of the Emperar. We are hurried by an acquaintance through the second court Into a third, where the whole front of the building opposite has been taken out, and the walls hung with white silk. Numerous candles are burning. In the ccnirc an altar on which is a small Incense urn which sends up a thin thread of fragrant white smoke. Just behind is an imperial yellow silk umbrella. Underneath it is placed the Tablet. The whole effect is somewhat that of looking on the illuminated stage of a theatre. In the court, before the tablet and a little to the right, are seven carpets spread for the use of the seven higher officials of the city, who alone make the prostrations. They emerge from their dress». ing rooms, nad stand motionless, each one in front of his carpet, and facing the altar. The Chinese Times had it, that he was on a journey master of rites from some dark corner, in a high | to Chi-nan-foo.~dertury, thin voice calls out rythmically "Kwel=" K-n-e-c-1," A musician just behind us atcom- panies him on a small Instrument made of a bundle of tuned reeds. The note is rather sweet, unsteady but somewhat querulous. At this signal the officials sink to their knees, "Kau shan" "Prostrate

I learn from Peking that the Board of Admi rally has again taken up the question of the big loan, and that Prince Ch'ing, the President of the Board, is communicating on this subject with Li Hung.chang. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
March 31st. The month of March leaves us with pleasant memories of the succession of bright balmy days- which continued with hardly a break from first to last. In fact the weather is too pleasant by far for the agricultural interests. There is great need of rain throughout the country. The water in the canals is quite low and this has had the effect of checking the number of incense pilgrims who come to worship in the temples around the city at this season every year. The lowness of the water, prevents the larger boats from reaching the place where they generally anchor, and so many of them prefer not to per form the pligrimage this year,
