Mr. Athalwood's Laertes was vigorous and manly impersonation't he spoke his lines with effect and was good all round. His parting, with his sister in the first net was exceedingly graceful. The Horatio of Mr. Montgomery on the other hand erred on the side of tameness, the actor seemingly being afraid to extend himself; but from as expiring 'effort we noticed in the final scene we shall expect better things from this gentleman later on. We regret being unable to commend the Ghost of Mr. Wilmot Fyrr; there is nothing we can find in the text to suggest that the famous speech to Hamlet should be delivered, in the slog song style associated with modern pulpit oratore, And that was the most noticeable feature In Mr. Erre's performance. The minor parts of Rosencrans and Guildensters were bandled by Messrs. H Hill and A. Money in a rather amateurish fashion, and yet they did fairly well. Mr. Chauncey Fdcott was a capital First Grave digger, and a word of praise must also be recorded for the Player King of Mr. Clem Wakefield.

Although Miss Lou'se Jordan's Ophelia was at times disappointing, it was as a whole, ever when critically analysed, a meritorious perform ance, and in her last scene she scored heavily, Miss Kate Dbuelas was in every way'satisfactory as Queen Gertrude and "played up to Mr. Min in the closet scene in admirable style. Miss Frances Ross spoke her lines clearly and distinctly as the Player Queen, and was quite charming as the court butterfly Osric. ・・

The performance, which did not conclude until 17.15 a.m. evidently gave great satisfac tion and the repetition announced for to-morrow night will be witnessed by a full house, Mr. Miln has brought a good all-round company to Hongkong and he deserves the cordial support of the community.

The crushings which have been obtained from the Balmoral Mine, resulted as follows: 340 teas of stone produced 77 oz. of free gold and 73 tons of pyrites, which latter are expected to yield at least a further 150 ounces of gold or say in all 15 dwt. to the ton.

These results are considered satisfactory, inasmuch as the stone was only taken from stapes left hy the exp'oratory work of ferier owners. It is confidently exaccted that within two months good shoots of gold will be exposed, aud's continuous satisfactory turn-out will be commenced.

The Radical members of Parliament are determined not to let the card scandal drop, and ther daily question the Ministers in the House of Commons respecting Colare! At a meeling of the Guards' Club, the Colonel intervening block of ground wich has been the Queen of the Mount Mire, and there is an emphatically denied the charge: The Prince of appled for. The Directors are of opinion that Wales, who was present when the alleged these properties will prove exceedingly valuable, cheating took place, attended the meeting and and will be only the question of a few months 'ated that there was ample evidence of the to prove this; the total experise is estimated not baronet's quilt. Five witnesses testified againg* the baronet The icensed, on one of the ncengiring when the che sting was discovered, was compelled to sign an agreement to abstain from playing cards for the remainder of his life.

For some weel a mast there have been unfavor- rable reports concerning the Hansard Publishing Union. Asa cevsequence, ordinary £o shares were qunted yesterday as Inw as £2 in £21. A short time 220 they stood at about £9. Yester day it bec the known that a receiver had been put in prosession at the office of the company in Catherine Street, Sand, at the instance of the Debenture Corporation. Limited. The receiver Is John Annan of Brass, Patterson & Co.

The husit eas of the union started under what arveared to be favorable conditions, for in 1889 ordinary shores received 12 per cent. At a meeting of the union on January 20, 1892, atisfaery account was given as to the pro gress of the business. The result was the raising of the original capital of £175,000 to £300,000 In July further increase of capital was sant- tinned to shemb shares, and the capital was raised to £10,000. There was alto a dehen-ript. ture capital of £50,oco. The Directors, Including Horatio Bottemity, Sir H. Ings and Sir R. Lethbridge, anticipated a golden fature,

It is now pretty generally known that a large amount of this, capital was not placed, and in consequence none of the business mentioned in the second prospectus was actually taken over. Battomley, finding his scheme rather too difficult to handle, endeavoured about a week ago to dispose of the unplaced shares by the formation of Bottomley's Trust, Limited.

In the mean time the difficulties. In regard to the payment of interest on the original deben tures have brought matters to a climax. The Debenture Corporation which makes it iin busi ness to invest in debenture securities, practically took over the whole of the union's debentures, amounting to $rocco, the interest on which would be $15,000. This has not been paid, and the corporation, acting in the interest of the bondholders, has taken the course of putting it in the hands of a rerciver.

The Shipping Federation has issued an ultimatum which declares that the dictation of unlons is unbearable and that the federation will refuse to employ any man unless be pledges himself to embark on any vessel with which he signs articles, whether the remainder of the crew. be unionists, or not. The federation disavOWS any intention to interfere with the unions or to reduce wages.

J.

Whitechapel wore a gala appearance all day. The lower class of people arrived in shoals from every quarter of the metropolis and gared at the scene of the murder near by. East End girls were dancing and slaging for crowds, callous even to the Ripper.

Sadler, who was arrested on suspicion of being the man who murdered Carroty Nell," was Conveyed, heavily guarded, to Arbour Squadron Prison today. He was lately firemse on the steamer Fer, from Turkey. A formidable.look Ing knife has been traced to his possession. He will be formally charged with murder to-morrow, Startling revelations are expected.

The attack on the Prince of Wales in con- nection with the Gordon-Camming gambling episode will not be permitted to rest with the reply already given by Home Secretary Matthews to the effect that the law against gambling was not violated. Other questions will be asked in Parliment this week, and they will not all be addressed to the Home Secretary. Mr. Gladstone is known to be in favor of letting the Prince alone. Socially he is on the best of terms with the Prince, and the latter exhibits and is supposed to feel high esteem for Mr. Gladstone.

Among his other dignities the Prince is a field marshal in the army, colonel-la-chief of three regiments of Life and Royal Horse Gusids, etc. The army regulations probibit army officers from playing for runney. The regulations are as binding on the Prince of Wales as a field mar. shal on the most recently appointed lieutenant. On this subject it is understood that some pertinent inquiles will be addressed to Hon. Edward Stanhope, Secretary of War.

February fyth. The Guards' Club have called a meeting to consider the case of Colonel Gordon-Cumming, who is accused of having cheated at a card party at which the Prince of Wales was present, The Queen is making inquiries into the matter and has expressed her, indignation at the occurrence.
