parts of the extessive vice-oyalty to pay their fust respects to the deceased nobleman, It is not very long since the body of the late Marquis Tedog, nephew of the late Earl, WIE dispatched from Shanghal to the same place. After having seen the remains of the lata Viceroy safely embarked for Ha-nan, our local Tac-tal, whose wife is a half sliter of the late Marquis, and nice of the late Earl, returned hurriedly to Shanghal to entertain his Superior Officer the Governor of this Province, whose name is Kang... His Excellency the Governor came to see the arrangements made for deepening the Wa Sung Kiang, called by us the Soochow Creek, and the dredging opperations going on at the "Ws. Sang Bar." The Governor did not land, bot passed through Shanghai in his barge, I am told, then immediately returned to Soochow after having verified what is going on in the way of river deepening in our neighbourhood,

I am told that large bands of marauders are

hovering around various large towns and cities, on the highway from Nanking to Peking. It is far from sale to travel alone in the middle of the day, and small caravans of travellers with carts or pack males are exposed to attack and robbery in the early mornings and evenings. Pistols and swords are the principal weapons in use amongst these bands of bighwaymes, but revolvers and spears are also used, as well as muskets and rifles by some of them. ' It la sup posed that many of these marauders are dif- banded, and badly paid or Berced soldiers, who thus band themselves together in partier of

■ score or two to avenge themselves on rich people, or well-to-do travellers. Rivers and

Canals are also infested by pirates, and many Berious depredations have been reported, Junk's travelling by sea between Foochow, Wenchow, and

From Western Cblox we hear that the Japanese inleg engineers engaged for the develope ment of the mineral resources in those distant parts, are returning to their homes, having'com- .pleted their three years engagements, without giving, it is said, very satisfactory returns. It is quite possible that the mining engineers spoken of have been hampered in their work by a lot of ignorant people like those who have for so long a time been allowed to interfere in, the balding of the Formosan railways. No man of spirit and practical ability will stand such interference with bis duties as Chinese pretenders to be cientific experts are always ready to put obstacles in the way of foreign experts.
