There cannot be the slightest doubt that there is no finer game ia the world-no better game known- than cricket (Loud cheers, } It teaches us the best virtues, for it teaches as loyalty, generosity and discipline, and as the Governor of this Colony I have not the slightest hesitations asserting that na a general rule, the best public servants are those who play cricket (applause.) We have lately seas most excellent cricket en our ground which was recently open- ed-1 may say inaugurated in such an excellent fashion. I am to be followed this evening by those who can speak much better as to the play we have seen (No, no) but I know this, it would be difficult to meet anywhere, oa aby ground, so many amateurs who can show such excellent play a har been shown a by eur friends from Hongkong and Ceylon I doubt if many amateur tears can show a more excellent sportsman that my friend on the right (Mr. Vanderspar) who has not only shown himself a lover of sport by coming bere but has proved himself a good all-round cricketer. I will not go in detail through his team, but will say that we have seen excellent cricket from Marks and that the bowling of Christoffels and KelaarƐ lo qu good as any bowling. Then I would refer also to our friend on the left, (Lieu Blair) who has shown excel. lent generalship in the team he has had charge of. As a good all-round criketer every one will admit he is hard to beat (Hear, heat) and he has been supported by one of his team, who has shown us at any rate how to bat ca this ground,

which has never had a fairer hitter or better batsman than Capt, Dunn (Hear, hear). I am not going to leave out the bowlers of his team, because I think Barff and Lowson's bowling is thoroughly deserving of the high praise which has been bestowed on it. Gentlemen, the teams we are entertaining have had the advantage of the artistic merit of Braddell, whom they have met, not upon the cricket ground, but is a way won't refer to, and he has fixed their names for ever upon the hard-wood of this Colony (Hear, hear, and laughter). We are very much indebted to Braddell for what he has done on this occasion. Nor must I amit to mention the name of a true sportsman who has taken a great practical laterest in the game-a man whom we miss very much to night-Swettenham (Hear bear), whose bowling and batting haveshown him a thoroughly good cricketer all-round, and who has taken the opportunity of showing his interest in the sport by presenting three cups to be contested for in the matches that have just been played. One of these cups will go to Ceylon, while Hongkong will have to content Itself with swettenbarn's hat (Hear hear and laughter). We are about to bid farewell to our visitors, we hope they will take back to their respective Colonies good notion of what they have seen here- chiefly as evidence of what there is to be seen further afield in the other settlements and in the Protected Native

States. They will be able to pour into the ears of the Ceylon planters the tale that we have land better than theirs (lear, hear): that there are

means here of more rapidly amassing a fortune thon in their island (Hear, hear and laughter). I mention this because an occasion like this should not be fost sight of as an opportunity to follow the advice of the poet-I do not know which poet-when he says -

Early to bed and early to rise,

Yan't bit of so ustem you advertise. The results of the cricket have been an adver- tisement of the measurable advantages we posses over both our neighbours (Hear, hear and laugh- ter). Gentlemen, I have detained you long enough. I trust that our guests will pardon all aims of omission and commission-and among the latter I am sorry is included shipwreck (Laughter). We wish them a safe return to their own homes and hope they will bear away with them a recollection of what we most sincerely wished to give them, a hearty greeting. We thank them for having come here and give them our good wishes for their fature success. We trust they will take away our expression of cordial good. will to our neighbours in Ceylon and Hongkong and that we may consider this the first of long series of these friendly contests (Hear best). Gentlemen, I call on you to drink the health of

He de sired also to propose the health of both of the Stralis Teams, coupling with the toast the name of Mr. Birch, their Captain. He had the plea sure, on the occasion of the last match in Hong- kong to put up Birch, and be must say that he was one of the best chaps he had ever met, a Jolly good fellow on the cricket field or in the mess room. He showed himself a thorough sportsman and he (Lent. Blair) hoped to have the pleasure of putting him up again in a couple of years, if the match could be got on regularly.
